2004 trouble staying lit when starting

I just signed the papers and purchased a 2004 Pathfinder. It's an LE Platinum edition, if that matters. The first time I drive it off the lot, after purchasing, I stop and it won't crank with just a turn of the key. If you turn the key and give it just a little gas it will stay lit. It has done that every time since I left the dealer. Any ideas? Once you give it that gas it never runs a second funny or feels sluggish or anything.

I am new here. I have a long history on Jeep forums. I built and wheeled jeeps for a long time when I was younger. I use to be Jeepinparrothead on forums. I figure I needed to change names on here. :)

Sounds like the thottle pedal may need to be reset. Park your rig and cycle the key from run(not start) then off. Stop for 10 seconds in run then off for 10 seconds. Repeat this 10 times ending in the run position. Try and start it and and see what happens.

You may also want to make sure you don't have air leaks passed the air flow meter and double checking to make sure the air flow meter doesn't have anything on it would also be a good idea.

I have to admit, the switch thing sounded like stuff you use to tell annoying people on jeep forums to try just to waste their time. ;) however, I did see others trying it. I tried your method and it didn't do anything I tried another "easy" method and I thought it worked because it cranked right up. But it didn't after I tried to crank it again. Air flow deal is and look for leaks.m tomorrow. I appreciate it.

A new wrinkle, I was seeing clients for about two hours this evening and it had time to cool off. It cranked right up when it was cold. That explains why it always cranked at the dealer it sat most of the day. Don't know if that helps. I hope I can figure it out. I will look up where the

I had this problem last year. Same symptoms: fired right up when it sat, but when already warmed up, wouldn't start without a little gas...then it's like nothing happened.

I can't remember the code it threw, but it was related to a high idle (it ran about 1K at idle when warm). I pulled off the throttle body to clean some accumulated junk, cleaned the intake tubing, checked all the hoses/lines for fitment/cracks, and did the pedal position learning process 5523Pathfinder described, as well as two other processes: throttle valve closed position learning, and idle air volume leaning. Solved the problem in the short term...it eventually threw the code again, but I just did the reset/re-learn once more and haven't had the problem since.

Both procedures are described in the FSM here in case you're not aware of them. See EC-73.

Thanks, everyone. I am going to see if I can do all these procedures in a few hours. I also found one that will get the airbag light to stop flashing.

Well, it was worth a try. It's never easy to diagnose something over the Internet!

Just out of curiosity, how is your oil level? There is no check engine/service engine soon light on? How many miles does it have?

Since you discovered that the startup issue occurs when cold, check the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor and IACV (idle are control valve). If the ECT gives bad readings to the computer, it will calculate the wrong A/F ratio, and won't start well. (ECT may be telling the computer that the engine is cold even when it's warm.)

So, the airbag deal worked. My airbag light is not flashing anymore.

Okay. I tried all those other procedures. They didn't help. However, I might be doing something wrong. On the last one, idle air control test, it says do something until the MIL stops flashing. Mine is never flashing. Make sense?

There are no check engine/service engine lights on, it has 172K miles.

I really appreciate all the help.

This is super frustrating. No matter how many times I do the three procedures my MIL never blinks. It just stay on the whole time. It's going to the dealer Wednesday. If anyone can think of something else let me know. Thanks.

Just for fun, and it will set a code, unplug your air flow meter and try and start it. Oh, pull a spark plug and see what brand and condition they are.

There is a slight chance you have a clogged catalyst, just want to rule other things out first. The dealer bought it from wont help you bring it happened right off the lot?

Nah, they won't help. I got a tremendous deal. I knew about the bank 2 emission code. I used that to get a steal. I knew that code could be something as simple as an O2 sensor or a bad plug so I wasn't worried about it. I knew it ran great so I didn't worry about a clog catalytic converter.

Update: I cleaned the MAF and the intake box and the throttle body. Hasn't done the weird no starting thing yet. Makes me happy. Also, the bose 6 disk changer radio was being weird and sometimes not finding the satalite radio but it hasn't done that all day either. Now I have a squeak coming from the belts or it coming from the pully on what I think is the power steering pump.
