Slartibartfast
My dad's r50 has been making odd exhaust noises, so he took it to a mechanic, and apparently the driver's side secondary catalyst is cracked (common problem but it's out of warranty). We live in an area with no emissions testing, and replacement cats are expensive. Has anyone put a test pipe on an r50 exhaust? Any chance this would throw codes or cause other issues? If so, any recommendations for an aftermarket cat?
tdauria
Sadly, I have no answers to your questions but depending on how bad the crack is and how desperate you get, you MIGHT be able to get a result using this technique with beer cans and jb weld (if this crack is on the outside surface)... http://jalopnik.com/5949291/how-to-fix-your-exhaust-with-an-empty-beer-can
5523Pathfinder
Nissan has a repair kit and its a piece of cake to install. It's not that much either. Talk to Rob(Alkorahil) Edited May 30, 2013 by 5523Pathfinder
Slartibartfast
The beer can repair sounds good to me but I'll check out the patch kit, thanks!
Slartibartfast
Update for anyone else with this problem, my dad took it to a local shop and had both resonators (turns out they're not cats) removed, welded up, and put back in, $150 out the door and it sounds right again. His research suggested that the patch kits don't hold up.
