Hello From SW Washington State!!

I'm fairly new to the whole forum thing so go easy on me.

I have had my '89 Pathfinder for almost 3 years now. It has been well taken care of before me, for the most part.....

The 5 speed trans is pretty tired, 5th gear bearing is pretty much toast. So I drive it as a 4 speed :(

until I free up some time to swap it out. And I also have the typical valve clatter, I plan on searching the forum as to everyone elses experiences into the best plan of action to quit the valve clatter.

I will post up some pics as soon as I figure out how to....

Thanks for the welcome!!

I have a photobucket just need to get some recent pics uploaded.

Probably my best answer to the mileage question is "unknown" ODO reads 295xxx but I am almost sure it is a wrecking yard cluster. The interior and especially the rubbers on the pedals are barely worn.

Welcome to NPORA!

Sorry to hear about the tranny issues, but it shouldn't be too hard to find another 5 speed to swap in. FYI, there is an advisery (TSB) to 'overfill' the manual trannys to make sure there is always proper lubrication. You can read about it in the Garage/TSB section but IIRC, the 'overfill' amount is 5.1 liters. Most of us have done this through the shifter hole. I doubt it would help your current tranny but it's something to remember for the next one.

About the valve clatter, have you tried sawdust? Just Kidding!!

I know some people have gotten some improvement by flushing the motor and changing the oil. It was counter intuitive, so I believe they went with thinner oil, not thicker...

Good to know about the overfill.....

I have had a used 5 speed trans from a craigslist transaction 2+ years ago. The kid was swapping out his 3.0 and dropping in a small block Chev. Just kinda questioning that trans. Has a tad of slop @ input shaft end, and had a good bit of metal stuck on the magnet drain plug.

I just attempted adding Marvels Mystery oil with last oil change, was only about 500 miles ago. Maybe time to do another with the flush, then give it another oil change after another 500 or so.

Looks clean!

The mystery oil probably won't do the trick. What weight are you running? Stock spec is 5W30 IIRC. I'm running 10W30 now but I might switch back next time I change it, it ticks a little on cold starts in winter.

Good bit of metal as in shavings or chunks? Shavings are normal, chunks, not so much. Can't hurt to open it up and take a look inside. If run with the wrong fluid the brass syncros will turn to glitter and the clips will fall into the pan, but hopefully that's not it!

Thanks , I'm running 10W30. The Marvels was a shot in the dark, and it has not helped the issue much if any.....

The plug had a decent pile of shavings and a few little chunks no bigger than a pencil lead. Probably not a bad idea to tear it down and have a look inside.

I bet if I looked on the forum there is probably a sticky with a breakdown on the trans to help me?

I don't think I've seen a manual trans rebuild on here, doesn't mean nobody's done it though. I've been known to search for my glasses while wearing them.

The guy on Beergarage.com does a tear down, although his Pathfinder is a 2WD.

A few people have done a tear down and/or rebuild of the 5 speeds, but I don't think there is a write up on how to rebuild here though. The FSM available for download in the Garage section should supply most of that info, and searches for MaritimeMan and TerranoNZ should have info as well.

I feel dumb for putting off adjusting the torsion bars!! Took me a whole 20 minutes!! Looks tons better + rides better!!

(even tastes and smells better)

new to me wheel & tire combo cost a whole $40...... tires are a bit worn, but they'll get me thru the summer. Two tires are 50% two are only 30%. Wheels were rough, peeling rusting chrome. I spent a hour and a half wire wheeling and sanding, then two coats of flat black!

Spent a good 4 or 5 hours beating the logging roads butt!! Covered easily 15-20 miles..... Really taking it easy, tires are kinda thin, and front end needs some love. But had to get out an lock the hubs for a bit. And NO MUD in July!! So much for the theory it always rains in Washington State!!
