Is it common in a Pathfinder for the fuel pump to stay on?

Hello everyone!

Been driving around and things were or seemed to be operating as well as could be expected specifically as it related to fuel economy. However lately (read out as the last week) it has been going through fuel like at least twice maybe even three times as fast. I am not hard on it, I do not gun it so I do my up most best to monitor my driving style to conserve fuel..

When I start the Pathfinder you can hear the fuel pump start running however it never seems to stop running. I can smell fuel sometimes like the engine is being flooded.

Is there a problem with the pump, could it be electrical I need to look at first? Is this something that happens often with a Pathfinder? Would I be best to just simply go and purchase a new fuel pump?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Yes, AFAIK the fuel pump always runs when the motor does, that is how it supplies pressure to the pressure regulator and fuel rails/injectors, but it shouldn't run constantly with just the ignition on.

If you smell fuel, check the clamps on the rubber hoses the connect the fuel rails, the rubber fuel lines that run down the passenger side of the engine compartment, the filler tube for proper fitment/no leaks and maybe the lines that go to the evap canister. If you have extremely poor gas mileage, it is usually 1 of 2 things, the MAF or the O2 sensor, MAF issues is usually accompanied by running poorly. It couldn't hurt to check the ECU for stored codes, sometimes that will give you some information.

+1, mine had a gas smell due to a loose hose right in front of the passenger's side valve cover. PITA to get to but once we cinched down the hose clamp, it quit leaking. I didn't notice much increase in gas mileage but then it wasn't a very fast leak.
