Ok fair enough, I'll do some research. Ok my problem now is to whether or not I'm going to try just changing the belt or just replacing the motor. I don't want to have to go through the blood sweat and tears not the mention the expense of changing the belt if it turns out that the motor is shot because of bent valves. There probably isn't a way to check if the valves are bent?

If you tore off the timing belt cover, and hooked it up for a compression check, you could probably turn the cam and crank separately to where they'd be if there was a belt, and check it that way. You might also be able to eyeball it if you pulled the heads, but I'm not sure of that.

Damn, I swear I already posted a response. Or at least I typed it... :unsure:

 

What he said. Step one would be to put on a new timing belt and then doing a compression check. You might have gotten lucky, some have... :shrug:
