Which Permatex to use?

Hi,

In preparation for the Thorley Header installation. Their manual suggests:

"9) (Note: The use of high-temp sensor-safe silicon sealer between the header flange and

header gasket is highly recommended.) Install the driver side header and supplied header

gasket from below the vehicle. Place the header on the stock studs and start the stock

nuts, however, do not fully tighten them at this time."

Which of the following is best used to ensure a proper seal between the DT Header flange

and the the supplied gaskets:

Thank you guys for the replies :)

Then option #1 it is (Copper RTV).

Did you use that with a GASKET or alone. According to the Permatex website

this tube is enough to MAKE a gasket by itself (just by applying it)?

Or is it best to it use between the GASKET and the Header Flange?

x2, use the gasket and apply a thin film on both sides. Allow it to tack slightly and stick the gasket to the head, and then install the headers. Remember, the torque is light on the header bolts, 12-15 ft/lbs IIRC.

Actually you don't need to put RTV on the gaskets at all. I haven't done it and never had issues with them ever leaking at the engine or at the flanges. The only place I stuffed some copper RTV in was in that cross over slip fitting pipe but you can just weld that.

I use the copper spray on the manifold gaskets. The tube works great if you have a broken stud in a place where it's a bitch to get a drill to, new gasket and a bead of that stuff... hasn't leaked in 2 years.

Right, you will only need it if you are re-using old gaskets or have some leak somewhere. On new gaskets and a new full set of studs you don't need RTV at all. In fact gaskets are designed to seal by themselves without the use of RTV.
