Basically I want to add a tire carrier onto my truck and i don't want a swing away...I want ot do a twin 4 bar link with strong arms or another means of setting it in 3 positions...

position 1: daily driving [middle]

position 2: wheeling [top]

position 3: loading and unloading spare/opening rear hatch [bottom]

below are some images of what i quickly sketched at work...i need to take some time and cut out some scaled pieces of what i have in mind but I was curious if anyone had any 4 bar link tire carriers

I'm pretty sure the link that connects to the wheel will have to be some varient of an "L"

alright...lemmie see if i can elaborate...

this would work but would be difficult to lift with a larger tire...

and would not help any of hte following problems that i identified

problems with a typical tire mount:

1. difficult to get tire on and off

2. blocks drivers view on daily driving if mounted too high

3. can drag when off roading causing hang ups and/or damage

4. tire weight on a cantilever swing out carrier can be pretty substantial and i dont want to go that route

a 31 weighs about 55lbs...a 33 weighs about 75 lbs and a 35 weighs about 100 lbs also with a 33 on the stock carrier you loose ground clearance on your departure angle...

i don't have a stock carrier on my 87 and don't want to hack up the body to install it...i'm planning on installing a new rear bumper soon that will move my trailer hitch up and increase my departure angle and beefing up the fuel tank skid b/c that becomes the next skid to hit... with a 33 in the stock location it would be dragging here or close to it...i drag my hitch/bumper all the time

with no hitch and a spare tire it would drag here:

going back up daniel at URE would drag a stock mount:

in hte next 12 months i plan to be on 35's so my thought here is i can have a mounting location that allows me to not break my back to change the tire...lets me put it up high offroad hwen i really dont need to look out he back glass and when cruising around town down a little lower so i can see out the rear glass...i think a twin 4 bar link would be the least complex and simple...

and heres my deall...75 lbs on a 2' moment arm is 150 ft-lbs or torque on the corner of the bumper so you take a 3-4 g load offroad which is 450-600 ft-lbs that i've got to react back out in the bumper on one side...i'd much rather distribute that load evenly into both frame rails symmetrically

 I could get super elaborate and do a roof mount lift like i've seen for jeeps but thought that was a little exaggerate

Thanks James...I satole it from an after market Jeep accessories manufacturer :hide: that I saw 2-3 years ago and can't seem to find them anywhere...there's used a 12v arc winch and actually loaded it on the roof in one option...ill see if I can start working out the links but I'm busy at work and the baby will be here any day now

it would be so annoying to have to lift things over the spare tire when loading the trunk, i am glad my carrier swings out of the way (I use the rear cargo area a lot). I wouldn't do a roof mount either. Simon had one on there and didn't like the way it changed the COG. It wouldn't be easy to wrestle a 35" tire up there either.

If the carrier is properly designed, the load will be spread over 2 points - the hinge (or hinges incase of the stock unit) and the area where it latches together opposite the hinge. The only time the hinges take all the weight is when you have the carrier opened and hopefully you're not moving. IMO swingout is the best design, which is why i kept mine and slightly modified it.

i drilled new spare tire mounting holes to move my spare up another inch or so, but you could go higher (except it will interfere with the glass hatch). I will hit the bumper before I hit the tire, but i wouldn't mind a little more height in your case. those rock trails you run are very lumpy.

If you still dont want a swing out, i would build a bumper/carrier with a hinge in the middle of the bumper. attach a long arm to it and mount the tire on the end of the arm. Then figure out a way to lock the arm in 3 positions (high, mid and low). Kinda like a clock face with only one arm and a tire on the end of it, you know?

Ahh, ok, that makes sense then. As Nige said though, you only have it open when you are stopped and many people have moved the tire mount higher.

It'll be interesting (as always) to see what you do... :aok:
