I got a check engine light on the way home while just cruising along at 40mph in 4th gear. Its actually done the same thing on the same stretch of road a couple times recently, but then will turn off. So I pulled the codes and got a 32, which is "EGR circuit." But the diagnostic page on the old MrJim.net site says this only applies to California trucks.

I'm wondering if this would mean an EGR valve or a sensor somewhere, and basically what to do. On another note, over the last couple days I've had a pretty nasty gas smell but mainly at start-up until its warm. It almost seems as if its coming from the exhaust. So... hmmm... :shrug:

The EGR system commonly builds up a lot of carbon and soot inside the EGR valve and associated tubes, etc. Something's probably totally plugged up and needs to be cleaned out or replaced. On another note, if you simply unplug all the wires for the exhaust temp sensor, EGR valve and recirc sensor, then reset the ECU, it'll never throw another ECU sensor code. :)

Really... So unplugging it won't cause any issues with it running? I may just go that route. That, or I have a day off in a few days, so I was thinking about hitting the wrecker to search for goodies and thought maybe I'd grab another EGR. Wonder if that's a wise idea. As for the issue of soot and clogging, that's what I figured from my days in auto shop years ago in high school. :D Also, do you think this could have anything to do with the gas smell that is happening? Seems like its from the exhaust. Both issues popped up about the same time.

Could also be the O2 sensor.

I believe the O2 sensor would yield it's own code in addition (or instead of) the EGR code.

That's kinda what I thought, but who knows. I have noticed a bit worse mileage to go with the gas smell on this recent tank, although its been all around town and no highway. I had some of the fuel lines replaced a few months back when it was in for the knock sensor, so that should be under control (hopefully). I ran with the "check engine" light yesterday for a few miles to work and back and it went back off and hasn't returned yet. I don't think its going to hurt it at this point, so I'm gonna dig into it over the weekend and hopefully replace the EGR. We'll see what happens...

Cool. I just pulled the code again on my lunch break and got another "32"= EGR. Would you advise for or against grabbing a used O2 sensor from the boneyard (if I could even get the thing off without breaking it) just to see if I'm already there for other stuff? I realize I wouldn't really know if that one was good, but its worth a shot if I can grab one quick rather than paying out $100+ on a guess. And if so, do you know what size wrench? I'll bring my set, but wouldn't want to be suprised and have it be one size off of what I have.

Ok, I think I solved it. Removed the EGR and it was nasty, so I sprayed the lower half several times with carb cleaner and worked the valve until the action was nice and smooth and easy. Then I disconnected the battery to reset the ECU, and I've been driving on it for 5 days now with no problems. Also, I found the gas smell to be at least partly from a loose clamp on a fuel line. Good times, free fixes.
