Abs Lights Stays On

Hey guys what would cause the abs lights to stay on? when we bought my wifes truck a few years back its always been on and now just finding the time to work on some of the stuff that ive been putting off for a while now.

Replaced the pads and shoes last november. I remember seeing a post by a member asking what the black box is under the drivers side and greg mentioned that its for the abs, My 93 has that same black box covered with that black steel plate and I dont think my 93 pathy has abs :shrug: Its not the factory alarm box

 

Could the abs module be bad thats why the abs lights is always on?

I forget what year they started ABS, but I know all 93+ have it(IIRC it was added in 90...).

 

The ABS light can be on from many faults, low fluid is most common, the sensor on the pinion is bad (my issue), the pump solinoid could be bad, etc.

Thanks bud. Im going to try and switch the abs module from my 93 to that 94 and if that doesnt work ill start trouble shooting from the sensor and so on..Reason why I though that it was the module coz when we bought it the guy who is also a mechanic at a local dealership here mentioned that the module was bad and he said it was in the rear quarter panel? so now after realizing that it was under the seat he might just be guessing on that problem

In both my 95s, the ABS light was on, even after I flushed/bled the entire system. I ignored it until Simon once posted that his light was on until he gravity bled the rear (passenger, driver, ABS module on the mid-inner passenger frame rail) so I tried the same and it worked. Seriously, no joke.

 

Try gravity bleeding it before proceeding... :shrug:

In both my 95s, the ABS light was on, even after I flushed/bled the entire system. I ignored it until Simon once posted that his light was on until he gravity bled the rear (passenger, driver, ABS module on the mid-inner passenger frame rail) so I tried the same and it worked. Seriously, no joke.

 

Try gravity bleeding it before proceeding... :shrug:

LOL My pleasure... :beer:

 

Make sure you have a full brake reservoir, attach a line to the brake bleeding nipple, put the other end in a container, loosen the nipple about 1/2 turn and wait. After a few minutes fluid will start dripping out of the line, about a drop every 2-4 seconds. Wait a while then lock the nipple shut, remove the line and move on to the next one.

 

Of course, don't let the MC fluid level get too low, I always work from farthest to closest to the MC (but you only have to do the rears) and make sure to bleed the ABS unit it's self!!

 

Hopefully you weren't joking or I just wasted 3 minutes of my life... :D

Thanks B . The last method that I was taught when I did my front brakes was to take the mc lid of and when I depress the the pistons itll bleed the brakes. This is the first ive heard of these method, Ive always bled my brakes the old fashion way.

Im going to try this this afternoon..seems easy enough...Now do I bleed the abs unit last after doing RR and LR?and is it the same procedure as doing it on the calipers?

I have never heard of depressing the pistons to refill the MC reservoir as a bleeding method and quite frankly, question it. raditionally used the 2 person method; 1 person depresses the brake pedal while the second releases and retightens a bleeding nipple allowing the MC to push out the fluid. :shrug:

 

Yes, do the ABS unit last, I was trained to start from the farthest from the MC and work progressively to the closest. Yes, the procedure is identical for the ABS unit, nipple and all.

Im going to have to bleed the front again today just to be on the safe side ..luckily i have the wife today to do the pumping..lol

 

gravity bleed the RR then LR ..then the ABS unit and move forward and do the traditional bleeding on the RF then LF :beer:
