thermostat gauge acting funny

well been in soide and out of my hanes manual and can not for the life of me find anything about the thermostat gauge.....while under poser and heavy breaking the gauge wildly jumps up and down....any easy way to find out what wrong with it.....97 pathy 199,2XX miles stock everything..... thanx mates

Loose connection/wire moving back and forth?

Check the connection to the temperature sensor itself. Is the terminal corroded or dirty? The temp gauge sensor is on the top of the engine, where the upper radiator hose attaches. Of the two plugs, it's the one with just one wire. The other terminal with multiple wires is the ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor.
