ticker
For months I have been hearing this intermittent noise coming from the engine. It is not a squeak or a squeal like a belt would make. It is not screeching like metal on metal. It is very much like when you rub a finger around the top of a wine glass, it has a resonant quality to it. Of course it is the type of noise that goes away as soon as there is anyone around to take a crack at diagnosis. It doesn't seem to be affected by engine speed although sometimes it will stop when the engine is revved. It happens in gear or out and with or with out the clutch engaged. I was trying to pinpoint a location today by listening with a hose but without success. Then for some reason I decided to squeeze the upper radiator hose and the noise stopped like I his a switch. Let go noise begins again. I tried this about 15 or twenty times and it worked every time. I had to squeeze it fairly hard to get it to stop. So what do you think this means? I have no idea, just thought I'd ask. 98, 5 speed 118,000 miles Thanks -T

ticker
Checked your coolant lvls? Yup, they are OK, level in reservoir is closer to MIN than MAX but within spec. Radiator is full to top.
Morningwould
what is the temp when it makes the noise? does it do it when it is cold?
Precise1
Damn, that's a new one!! Only things I can even guess at is that the thermostat is vibrating due to the coolant flow or even less likely, the waterpump bushing is squealing a little but you are hearing it through the hoses (water transmits sounds extremely well)... Or, your friggin Pathfinder is posessed!!!! B

ticker
what is the temp when it makes the noise? does it do it when it is cold? temp in normal range, doesn't do it at start up has to have warmed up a bit. ticker
bearings in water pump. Wouldn't the water pump bearings be making noise all the time if they were bad?
87pathy
Wouldn't the water pump bearings be making noise all the time if they were bad? no. bearings are funny. i would bet that with additional load (hose being pinched off createing back presure) its making hte bearing more "stable". If you read his posts, it also says it does not do it when its cold. I.e. thermostate closed, createing more back pressure. I vote water pump bearing. Bummer, I'm guessing this means I'll be needing a water pump in the near future. I've never had a water pump die on me, any ideas on what the scenario is when it goes? ie, Must stop instantly and pull over and towed home or is it possible to limp home for repairs? k9sar
if your WP goes, you will loose the ability to cool the engine. You can get it home in short bursts but keep a good eye on the temp. When mine went, it got real noisy real quick. Even though the WP leaked through the bearing, it did not dump all of the coolant. I would suspect the same from yours. It will either spin noisily or it will seize (which is not likely since there is lubricant in the coolant).

Precise1
You can get a Nissan dealership parts from Rob Lacy (aka Alkorahil). The water pump will go for about for about $100 IIRC. Look in the Classifieds/Services section for the contact info. I can not stress using him enough; good prices, great quality and service!!!
