Thermal Clutch Fan? Fan dosnt spin when car is off

I have a 94 manual tran pathy with 149,604 mi.... got her smogged today- all good passed with flying colors... however, during the smog as the engine revd to 2500 I couldnt help but cringe as she whined and squeeled.... asked my mechanic why - (whom I trust only cuz he owns a 98 pathy that he adores) he told me my thermal fan clutch was going bad and showed me how his fan spinned when the car was off and mine didnt he explained something like it would run cooler when cold or something like that.... anyone have any similar situations??? What about changing the A/C Compressor Control Relay.... would help I wonder?? And where would that relay be located at????

Oh and just to add a couple months ago I was expericening that high squeeling noise ALL the time.... when I started the truck, as I drove it and shifted and it only got worse as the car got hot very embarrassing.... had my mechanic look at it and he tighted the Alternator belt and its nice and quite now. thank god!

Now the clutch fan?? Damn it always seems like something.... before all this i had that no start starter clicking problem... changed starter, battery all that still didnt solve the problem, finally and its been almost a year now in August- its been a perfect start up every single time... my mechanic ran some kind of boost line from the starter sylonoid up to the interlock relay to give it extra amp power and its been perfect perfect perfect... I should take a picture of what he did cuz it was so simple and it sounds like so many other people have that same problem and cant figure out why.

Anyway... thoughts on the fan? Probably gotta just do it hu??? He told me it would be about $200 bucks to replace- however when I looked up the fan clutch on Auto Zone the part was $57.00 - is it a lot of labor work????

Thanks!

I love my pathy!!!! :)

the cluthch fan has a mechanism in it that expands when its hot, this makes it turn closer to the same speed as your water pump pulley when the engine is hot. as the engine cools the clutch expands less allowing the fan to slip more on its shaft and slow down so that it doesn't over cool the engine. If you can't turn it with the engine of it is prolly seized and you need a new fan clutch.

I still have mine from when I converted to electric fan, It works fine and its yours for 15 bucks + shipping. PM me if you want it. The fan has a split on one side but it will hold together fine as long as its bolted to the clutch. I'll prolly just send the clutch to save you on shipping unless you decide you want me to send the fan with it.

changing it is easy;

  • losten your alternator belt
  • remove your fan shroud
  • remove the 4 nuts on the fan/water pump pulley.
  • slide the old clutch and fan off
  • unscrew the fan from the clutch and put it on the new clutch
  • put new clutch and fan on water pump/pulley and re-install the 4 nuts.
  • intstall fan shroud and re-tighten alternator belt

$200 seems steep as I consider it a 1 hour job (with the appropriate tools of course), perhaps the mechanic is quoting a fan clutch purchased from the dealership?

Damn it always seems like something....

Consider this: at 150k miles, your truck has driven around the world 6 times!! If it wants the occasional belt/fan clutch replacement or wiring, that seems pretty damn reasonable to me...

I recall someone mentioning a second wire to the starter before. I understand that sometimes replacing the single cable, connections and ground strap can achieve the same thing.

Really?? 6 times, that is quite impressive?? I certainly did not mean to sound unapprecitative- So.. I'll take back what I said. :suicide:
