Engine knock 95-96

Any one ever hear of this?

 

My 'new' 95 (97,000 miles) has a slight intermittent knock or tap (not lifter tap) at idle, but runs fine so I didn't think much of it.

My 'old' 95 (132,000 miles) doesn't have it and runs like a champ. It seems to have more power, but manual VS auto tranny so that's just a guess.

I'll check build date and see how far apart they are. Maybe they span when this started.

I'm wondering what damage it does and if I should plan on swapping motors.

after a modification meant to reduce manufacturing costs. Ford offered an extended

warranty of 7 years/160,000 km on the Mercury Villager, which shares the same

engine. Nissan sent no warnings to clients, but maintains that it has taken the

necessary actions regarding this problem.

They must have switched to superstitious hampsters that keep knocking on wood.

The only knockign I have heard from my 2 '95 engines were either lifter, exhaust manifold, or the crankshaft. When I spun a main bearing, even after I replaced them, there was a little play in it and the one piston was hammering the bearing on each power stroke. Eventually, it flattened/spread it so much that the engine was noisy as hell and I decided to just swap it out.
