What should I do?

I made a list of all the problems right now with the Pathy and what's already been worked on...don't really know if I should sell it and buy another one, keep this and one save up for another one, or what...

1) Diff seal blown, non usable 4x4 for now

2) Transmission

3) Ticking lifters

4) Miscellaneous dents and missing minor parts

5) Power steering leak

6) The situation with the front end, shocks in the UCAs (and completely dead driver's side shock), pulls to the left hard, driver's side wheel sticking out way further then the passenger side, center link and ball joints are very worn, etc.

7) Horrible gas mileage

8) Passenger side drum being invaded by axle grease

9) CV boots torn

But then again, there's A LOT of work and money already in it, and it's my baby, knowing I've put a lot of hard work and money and time fixing things makes it hard to let it go. And it STILL feels like I could drive it off a cliff and it would be just fine. I like the way it rides and handles, but I don't like the lack of power and stupidly spaced gears in the auto tranny.

So far that's been replaced:

1) Plugs, wires, cap and rotor

2) ECM Coolant Temp Sensor (the $850 job one lol)

3) Muffler, cat

4) Tires, brakes

5) Compression rod bushings

6) O2 sensor

7) Coil

8) Reed valve

9) Window

10) Various vacuum lines

11) Thermostat, almost all the coolant hoses

12) Aftermarket tranny cooler

I'm pretty sure that's not even all, will probably think of a few later

  • 4 weeks later...

I would say go to a local junkyard and find a pathfinder and pull the motor and trans, and get the parts that are missing!

Go to advanced auto parts.... get some bondo and fix those dents....

Then also look at your front end and find out what are the specific things that are wrong and then pull em from a pathy at that junk yard...

once you get that engine and trans, build a stand in you garage and get that motor to work well... then do a swap....

Takes time but its worth it.....

Then work on the specifics like paint and what not once you get it all to work... you might just wanna get a whole pathfinder from a junkyard then take parts as needed.... and sell it to a scrap yard when done

add the costs that you're thinking and compare that to a cost of a replacement.

if the frame is good, it may be worth it... if not, most of the stuff you have done in the past will either be a spare or you can switch it over to the newer truck.

The frame is 100%

My oil smells like gas, which I think has something to do with the ticking lifter I have.

The seal is only 11 bucks, plus gear oil (what weight again? Might as well ask since I'm typing).

Going to do the boots while it's all torn apart.

Transmission problem went away. But I have a new tranny for it anyhow.

No junk yards anywhere near here have a Pathfinder, or any Nissan of any sort. Plenty of everything else though...

Engine and trans on CL right now for $250. That requires money.

The entire front suspension is bent backwards, I'm taking it to a place who does only frame work to spec it and see what exactly is bent, how much, and if it's fixable.

Have an almost free way to paint it and weld up my rear end so I'm not worried.

I also have a very easy way to get the 350 and tranny out of my old Suburban.

Its probably more cost efficient to keep this one and replace things that are bad. If you buy a new car then you have a payment of 200+ a month for 3-5 years. And things will still go wrong with it costing $$. If you buy a used car such as another pathfinder things are still going to go wrong with it and you dont know the car's history. The same things or worse could go wrong with the "new" vehicle and you could end up spending even more $$.

Just my :my2cents:

Very true. I'm not old enough to make payments on something, nor do I have a job. I am looking though. I'm leaning towards saving up, finding a junk Pathfinder, and start swapping the parts that are better than mine.

Mine really isn't that bad, though. I need to fix the lifter, replace the diff seal and boot, and do some brakes and that's about it.

I can live with the bent suspension part, it doesn't affect drivability other than a bonus automatic lane changer.

I like knowing every bit and piece about this truck, so when something acts up I have a good idea what it might be.

It's not like parts are failing left and right, it's long-lasting problems that I'd like to get taken care of and improve.

If I could find $500 somewhere for parts, I would be golden :aok:

Yeah I'm gettin there.

There's days where I want to just push it off a cliff and be done with it and go buy my mom's Cherokee off her.

Then others where I can see positively.

What parts were you thinking of?

Sending unit and all the pieces in the gas tank are what i really need.... if you got a throttle body i would look into getting that off your hands...

dude hes not parting it out. look in the "parts for sale" section of this site, there are a few part outs going on, someone is sure to have some of the things you need.

Yup. But I'm not going to be parting with any of that anytime soon, unless my engine swap plans suddenly get pushed forward a little.

BUT I got the seal for the diff and now I just need the gear oil and motivation and impact wrench to take the diff out and replace it...

Which reminds me, one of the rear diff carrier nuts stripped, so I'm not really sure what to do about that...
