Rear hatch

I don't know the R50s, but with your fairly uninformative information, here is my guess: You have lost/broken/worn some stupid little plastic piece.

You need to have someone pull the lever and watch to see what moves. Then you need to move the linkage (from the handle) until the the lift gate unlatches. If it unlatches, the problem is probably in the handle mechanism. If it does not unlatch regardless of what you do, the problem is in the lock/latch mechanism. I'm betting on something in the latch works.

Experiment and describe it to us if you don't find the answer.

just for general information was my response to the PM.

If this is on your R50 (i think thats what a 97 is) i can't be of much help. If it's on a WD21 if the rear hatch wont open unlock it put your forearm on the handle for the rear glass and push down while trying to open the door this may help it (you could probably try that on the 97)

Other than that I have no experience with any pathy's newer than 95. but I will assume there are a couple screws towards the bottom and the rest are pop pins or body clips and you can carefully remove those then have access to all of the mechanisms inside.

Hope that helps some.

so i guess it helped some seeing that you got the panel off...

I hope you get this figured out; I think mine is heading in the same direction. I can still open it, but most of the time I have to unlock, relock, then unlock it again to get it to open.

My Dodge mini-van was doing that, pulled open the panel and sprayed the mechanism and linkage with PB Blaster, works fine now.
