Well I have finally had enough of my job and since I'm stuck on the west coast now with the gf I can't go back to my old job on the east coast yet but the next best thing came across my inbox the other day...Pretty much have a job offer there in Portland @ the Freightliner HQ doing the same work I did back east on the same chassis that I worked on back east making $12 more per hour than what I"m currently making at my present job which I must say has gotten worse over the past 3 or 4 months and has been pretty unstable as far as hours go due to the companies finances...

So I'd be working around this area:

4435 N Channel Ave

Portland, OR 97217

so I was looking to see if that is a good area of town and if there were some reasonably priced apartments (1 bdrm or studio would be awesome)...I've been checking out city-data and looking around at apartments online but I knew there were quite a few folks on here from that area and could probably give me better insight

Thanks

Both of my brother-in-laws are from and live in the area. My wifes brother lives in Vancover, just across the columbian river. My wifes sisters husband grew up in Portland. He knows that city like the back of his hand. As for living there, Im not alot of help. Nice city though! That area, I do believe, is near the Rose Garden where the Trailblazers play. That whole area has gonethrough a pretty big transmormation over the last 10 years or so. The city really cleaned it up the last time I was down there(about 4-5 years ago)

Ugh, Portland. I live in Salem, 50 miles south. Every time I go to P-Town I'm reminded why I don't live there. Heh. My sister lives near Troutdale (satellite town 10 miles or so to the east), but she and her hubby are well-to-do and apparently it doesn't matter where they live, they both make a paycheck in the medical industry.

Typical bigger-city area, no idea on housing except that the area you pick usually determines your costs. Lots of bums and schmoes walking around downtown with their hands out begging. High-speed internet is easy to get usually. Heh.

The area where your work will be is really industrial-area IIRC so you'll have to search for places to live somewhere either in the city or outside Portland, which is what most people do.

I applied for job in Portland a few years ago and looked around a bit. From where the job is, I'd say that you should look at the other side of the river or to the west so you don't have to cross the city every day. From what I saw when I flew up there, the traffic can get pretty bad due to the limited freeway system and several bridges. I would have been to the south and looked into the real estate there; you could still buy an acre with 1-2 buildings on it about 10 miles south of Portland for $250,000 (cheap to me,LOL). You should be able to find a decent place to live for $600-$800/mo...\

Thats about all I know, hope it helped. Good luck and congrats on the pay raise!!!

I lived in a town called Beaverton for 3 years when I was younger. Which is a fairly good size city to the west of Portland. Alot of people live out there and commute to P-Town everyday. Its not that far, but as the fellas said earlier it can be slow going sometimes due to traffic congestion. Between Beaverton and Portland is a hill range called the west hills. Beautiful hills, quite a few very nice homes. And it makes for a nice drive going accross them and coming down in to the city. The rural country is pretty close to Beaverton and Portland because of what they call the urban growth boundaries.

My older brother still lives out there, last summer I spent about 6months up there with him and I'm quite fond of the whole area. The one thing that kind of turns me off about up there is the cost of living. Its alot higher than what I'm used to. Aside from that I love it.

Is public transportation pretty good? I've been told that getting around can be a PITA with the limitations of the highway's and I'm hoping to leave my Camry down in CA and ship the 95 up to me there so I would limit my daily driving as much as possible and try to get out on some trails...I guess it all depends on what offer they come back with...

Thanks for the input guys

I've been told theres lots of rain, titty bars and coffee shops and thats about all I get from most folks

My advice is to live in Vancouver on the Washington side of the Columbia, or God's side as I like to call it. I dunno where you are politically, but Portland is uber left-wing. Its known as the City of Roses, but I call it the city of Pansies.

The MAX system is effective transportation through the city but it is also a magnet for crime. It provides cheap easy egress for muggers, rapists, gang bangers and various other schmucks and vagrants. Don't park your pathy at the park-n-ride with anything of value inside.

Burnside Blvd. is hobo junction. Intersate Blvd. is a cesspool as is most of northeast Portland in general. There are two (count 'em, two) Popeye's Chicken restaurants on MLK Blvd. if you likes you some red beans and rice with your chicken.

There are more strip clubs per capita in Portland than any other city in America.

You can tour a decommissioned nuclear sub at OMSI. The weather is beautiful in the summer and mild in the winter. Outdoor activities are always nearby and there is plentiful beer.

Oh, and all they sell in Chinatown is Chinese food and porn.

Good luck

Basically its all kind of like a movie. Some people give it horrible reviews, while other people think its the greatest thing they've ever seen. Back when I lived in Beaverton I was in high school, and did a huge amount of travelling on public transit, I thought it was pretty decent. I'm sure there is crime involved, but then again, what doesn't invole crime nowadays?
