ajspath
my engine was overheating because coolant leaked from my torn bypass hose (http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=7404&st=0). the result was smoke under the hood . i believe the smoke was from the burning coolant over the engine cause the smoke didn't smell like anything. anyways, the smoke was able to travel into the car while i was driving (only then did i notice the overheating) from the handle brake. why? this might have to do with why that same area radiates alot of heat during long periods of driving; and why i smell gas when i start the car in cold conditions (even when the windows are shut). i appreciate your help everyone! Slick
the boot underneath the shifter boots you SEE are probably torn, (if you lift up the "main" boot, you will see a black "liner" that has a tendency to tear) thus allowing the suction of the steam (not smoke) to get sucked through, or, it was actually coming through the floor vents and you THOUGHT it was coming through the shifter boot........ coolant has a distinctive smell. yo must've had more h2o that coolant int he rad... when mine blew at 65mph the steam blastin out was wicked cool and it stank of coolant lol as for the exhaust fumes. do you have a "stock location" pipe or modified like mine? i can smell exhaust on start up/first idle in the morning cuz of my modified/relocated pipe...... usually the fumes come through the back of the truck. it's not like a pathfinder is air tight like new cars.......... Simon
The other spot to check for the fuel smell is the small fuel hose between the rails. THe clamps on that could use a tightening.
94extreme
if you have excessive heat from the hand brake area, you may want to look for tranny cooler mod here in these forums.

ajspath
^ thanks everyone. especially slick!! and oh yah, i meant the smell gets worse when i open the window and the car is moving... that's weird cause i thought i'd get the clean air blowing inside. it probably is that boot. i'll have a look. @ slick
