Phantom Grille

(I searched and found noth'n, though I can't imagine that this is an original question...)

So, as far as the FSM shows, the Pathfinder and the Hardbody sport the same grill (Type 1 or 2).

Does anyone know of any reason a Phantom Grill for the HB wouldn't fit the WD21?

Has this been done? Pics or links?

I think the truck would look absolutely trick with a black powder coat grill behind and ARB bumper and big driving lights.

:ph33r: <--Like this in reverse.

They're not the same. You can fit the HB's grille to the Pathfinder, true, but most Hardbodies had 6054-type sealed beam headlights, not the PF's composite lensed units. As such, you would need to swap over the lighting stuff from a Hardbody as well.

Oooh. Well thanks for that.

So how hard a task are we talking? Just source the lights and the buckets then work out the wiring, or will it turn into a welding affair? Do the two use different radiator supports?

Is this why I haven't seen it done (too much of a PITA)? Are the HB lights inferior?

It has been done a few times. Just need to get the parts, basically the mount buckets, lights and wiring. The radiator support is the same so all the mount points are there.

That doesn't sound so bad. The mounts are only around $21.

I sure wish I could find some pis before I jump in. There's plenty of slammed HBs out there with them, but they're a slim basis of comparison.

I guess imagination will have to do. I'll update once I've started.

Poke around on AC (4x4parts.com) for pics and swap part info.

Thanks! Lots of info once you decipher their seach feature.

This is much more doable then I was afraid of, however there are a few more parts than I thought.

courtesyparts.com has everything required, though I'll probably just hit the JY.

Here's their diagram showing the difference between Sealed and Composite mounts:

The guys @ AC talk like the sealed type is a better light. Fact or opinion?

Bumping the ded, I know....

After quite a bit of searching, I found a good set of buckets locally (Nissan trucks don't go to the JY in KY until they rust to death, or hit a tree).

I've got them installed and wired. All in all, this is a 1 hour job total (Mine's taken longer because it's raining like a MF'er, which isn't fun weather for wire splicing). The conversion requires 4 bolts and 6 wire connectors. No other issues.

That is, if your rad bracket isn't buggered up from the previous owner running into a ditch like mine is...

I'll get pics ASAP, but I think I'm going to need some body shop assistance before I look into buying the grill.

Ask, and ye shall receive...

As mentioned, the D-side is rough. Probably beyond repair. I'm crossing my fingers.

Right is good. Just 4 bolts.

The "bucket" is actually an assembly, like the diagram above, consisting of three major parts.

The Ring, the mounting bracket, and the actual bucket itself.

My best advice to someone doing this project would be to grab the whole headlight from the donor.

Loosen the four mounting bolts and yank. Clip what ever wires come out with it and keep those too.

Though, you can take a nice harness from a 240sx that will have a factory plug connector instead... Guess which I did!

so which headlights throw the most light?

Has anyone compared this?

I'm also interested in seeing before and after pics when the new grill is installed.

From what I've read, the sealed beams have a better out-put. However, I'm running a cheap set of EBay projectors that I swiped from my bro’s MR2 ATM, so I don't have a good basis of comparison. These lights have always been hard to see unless the road is pitch-black. Street lights make the beam undetectable.

When I put in the grill, I plan on switching over to a set of black reflectors that will be better hidden. The output will probably still be low, but I'll compensate with driving lights mounted to the bumper.

I'll most-likely never gain anything as far as light efficiency goes. The whole project is more cosmetic than functional.

I'll keep everyone posted as it comes together.
