Roof mounted spare

Is there anything out there that will allow for mounting the spare on the roof without the use of a rack? I have found some things that "might" work, but just want to see if there is anything I missed.

If I cant find anything I will just cut the spare mount off the rear swing rack, modify it and bolt it to the roof.

Probably about the best idea, as most things available are for mounting in a truck bed and are basically just a mount you bolt in place in the bed. Never saw a carrier made for a roof top specifically.

You don't want to bolt only a spare and stock rack to the roof, you'll cave the roof in after a few bumps. You need either a stock roof rack, aftermarket roof rack or tire carrier. Plus the stock interior tire mount has offset legs so it won't lay flat in the first place.

As 88 said...not a good idea without some supports. I have a stock rack, with longitudinal supports along the roof, and with my tire on top, evenly balanced, sandwiched between the crossbars, my roof is bowing a little from the weight. Granted, it's a heavy 33" tire, but it's a lot let stress on the roof sitting flat, than if you were to mount it to the bracket, then bolt that down. Plus, the supports on the roof that come with the stock roof rack do add a good amount of capacity.

There are strengtheners across the inside of the roof, just keep the mount points in line with or close to those. If you are worried about them being weak, just throw some wood up there under the headliner to help make it more rigid.

Well it would have been more complicated than simply bolting the carrier and tire directly to the roof. I knew Id have to spread the load(I did have ideas for this) and I was hoping that the roof was pretty strong to begin with, but I guess thats not the case. Looks like I will need to run some sort of rack.

Hey 88, just noticed you are from Salem. I have family there. I havnt been up to Oregon in years.
