Safeway Gas

Lately my '88 pathy has been lurching a lot and dieing at intersections. It was kind of nerve racking not knowing if when you hit the gas you would go anywhere. The problem ended up being that the fuel filter didn't like Safeway gas which my parents had been putting in their Toyota van for years. I ended up replacing the fuel filter and at the time didn’t know it was the Safeway gas. So the next time the tank emptied guess where I went. It got really bad again and I discovered that it was the gas. My auto tech teacher recommended I just replace the fuel filter and run Chevron gas, or try using some 3m fuel injector cleaner. Since the filter had just been replaced I tried the cleaner and 12 gallons of Chevron gas. Fixed!

Has anyone else had trouble with certain brands of gas? Or had a similar problem?

For the past couple months my '88 has run poorly (lacking power, pinging, etc) off of Safeway regular (87 octane), but runs just fine off of the mid grade (89 Octane)

It's almost as if the quality of the fuel has gone down. Actually, I have wondered several times if overall the quality of the average 89 octane grade has gone done because I have noticed a few other random brands (it seems to depend more on the station I get it from) has done the same.

But, I have never had a problem with Chevron fuel.. I actually prefer it above all others. Every vehicle I have ever owned as run great of their fuel.. including the Pathy.

As it was explained by a delivery guy at a station/store I worked at when I was 18... The trucks have two tanks, 87 and 92... mid grade is achieved by mixing the two while filling the stations tanks.

If there was no difference then my truck would either ping off of the mid grade or not ping of the regular.. but that is not the case ;)

It is however true that the same fuel may be found at multiple different local stations.. ever watched the delivery tankers jump from station to station ;)
