Another Clicking Noise

Hey guys what would cause my rear tires or maybe my axle to make a clicking noise..It sounded like a rock stuck on my tire thread and I checked the thread and no rock there.

Sounds like the bearing but not sure.

 

How hard is it to pull the center rod out off the axle or whatever its called where the rims attaches to?

Im looking at the FSM and nothing on there shows me how to take that off to check the bearing. Its a drum brake

its easy to get the axle shaft out...4 12mm? bolts on the backside the beast is getting to the bearings...I think you need a press and a specialty tool to get the locknut free and get the bearings/races out and in

I did not look, but do you have a LSD?????

Im looking at the FSM and nothing on there shows me how to take that off to check the bearing. Its a drum brake

 

I forgot to mention that you can check the bearing without pulling the axle...

 

place your had at the top and bottom of the tire and push and the right and left (creating a couple) (in leighmans terms put a hand at 12 and 6 and push and pull in opposite directions like push in on the bottom and pull out with the top and rotate back and forth and do the same at the 3 and 9 oclock positions) if it rocks or rattles excessively the bearings are loose and/or need replacing...prior to doing this make sure all your lugs are tight...

Thanks guys...It is a LSD Thomas..Im going to do the check you mentioned UNC...If it dies wabble Im going to pull the shaft out...That special tool that you mentioned.is that for pulling the bearing out of the shaft? I might have to take it to a shop to have it pressed out.

 

Im going to take the bolts off behind it and just in case you guys arent around to answer another question Im going to ask you now

I know I might have to take the drum off,Is there anything else that needs to come off?

I know there is a tool is for the locknut

Is this the tool UNC? I used this on my front bearing also.im assuming that theyre the same way in the back?

nope thats for the front but that looks awfully a lot like mine trying to locate Nissan part number and image...be back momentarily....the thing with the rear is the axle shaft has to fit down the middle of the part so you could make 1 if you have a welder or strap wrench and means of removing the center of whatever socket you can find that will work

Thanks UNC..sure appreciate it....Is that a specialized tool that the dealer carries or it can be rented at autozone?

Another question is ..If its my bearing can I buy it from a local bearing shop or thats another dealer item?

 

BTW I did the test that you mentioned and theres no play at all holding it 12-6 and rotated it 3-9...That thing is solid...Im going to do more inspection tomorrow

Are you *sure* that its from the rear end? Just a though, sound effects an all.

another thing you may be able to do is jack both rear tires up and rotate them since your LSD it will be easier with both wheels off the ground (i dont even know if you can do it with just one off) some1 else may know but does an LSD click like a locked rear end? I dont think it does but I havent ever experienced one

well thats good

 

bearings you can get at any parts store I think but I have had issues with getting the front outter bearings to fit over the spindle due to bad cross over references

 

I dont know about the tool...autozone didnt have it in NC but then again the guy may not have known what he was talking about so it cant ever hurt to go check

LSD will click, my daughter whines about it almost every day... I tell her not to turn the corners so tight....

 

I know she wont say Sh!t when the snow flies and she goes everywhere....

Im pretty sure its coming from the left rear tire Mr.P...I had the wife drive it and I was on the passenger side and couldnt hear it

 

It didnt make that clicking noise before

did you check it really well for FOD (nails/screws and whatever else could be in there) I had a nail wear the head off of it and it clicked and I never could find it until I got new tires...it never lost air or anything like that...just a thought

 

what about beauty rings on the wheels rocks can get trapped in those as well or something in the drum or possibly the dust sheild is bent and it hits the drum...

 

also I have had a "clicking" from up front where I got some pretty ****** brake pads from advance and the shims slid off and started hitting the hubs and clicked 6 times per revolution so you may want to check that out as well

What was the last clicking noise? You didn't bother to feed back.. Was it even resolved? Perhaps it is the same noise as last time, making this a repost.

I have not thoroughly checked what UNC mentioned...However that darn clicking noise comes and goes..Im going to have to remove the drum soon as it warms up a bit here and I will definately keep you guys posted on what I find out

 

It is not resolved yet and hoping to find out soon whats causing that click.

Just an update on this thread..The clicking stopped couldnt tell when but I still checked on what UNC had mentioned yesterday. didnt find any of the possible cause of that strange clicking

What was the last clicking noise? You didn't bother to feed back.. Was it even resolved? Perhaps it is the same noise as last time, making this a repost.

auto hub was the other clicking noise ..replaced it with manual hub and solved the prob.
