Rear Axle Swap And Disc Brake Conversion

my pathfinder is my daily driver and I want to rebuild the rear axle because the rear seals are leaking so I plan to get another one from a salvage yard hopefully with rear disc brakes. I also want to do a disc brake conversion. I know that disc brakes were optional.

My question is will the axle with rear disc brakes bolt up in place of the drum brake axle or will I have to do suspension modification? my axle is an H233B

My next question is will I have to do any modification the the ABS system to acomidate the new setup

My pathfinder is a 93 4X4 XE

Has anyone else done this swap?

1) All WD-21 Pathys with ABS have rear ABS only.

2) The ABS sensor is located between the differential housing and the imput shaft. It detects changes in the rate of rotation of the rear shaft when braking, and triggers the ABS actuator to dump brake fluid if it detects a potential wheel lock.

3) The ABS sensor and actuator is the same on all WD21 models regardless of if it has rear disks or drums.

If the axle seals are leaking, replace the seals. No need to replace the entire rear axle!

I plan to take the axle completely apart, have the housing powder coated, put all new bearings and all new seals and possible new gears. this is going to take some time so the plan was to get a second axle so my daily driver wouldn't be out of commision while I'm working on it. otherwise I would agree with you yes just replace the seals. and besides if I get a second axle I can find one already setup for rear disc and hopefully make that swap easier.

OK. Boy, that sounds like fun. Well, to begin with here's this write-up. http://nissannut.com/projects/H233b_disc_brakes/

Here's another thread with a TON of info in it. :D Post in that thread so we can keep the topics together, K?

Final note: re-gearing is NOT cheap unless you score used gears from somewhere. Gear sets run about $500 per axle from Nissan or AC and they're the only people you can get them from. :(

  • 17 years later...

i have a super rusty axle that im not sure is a LSD but it has disc brakes on my 89. I have a really clean lsd dif that i know of for sure but is has drum brakes on my parts truck.

How hard is it going to be to put the 89's disc brakes onto the 95's clean LSD axle? Am I going to have to press the backing plates off of both axle shafts and put the 89's rusted backing plates onto the 95's clean tube? and asking in advance does anyone know where to get new backing plates?
