RWC5S2
Acting on what I believed to be correct info I ordered the complete front and rear differentials off a 2003 Xterra 4X4 to exchange for the units on my 2003 R50. The Xterra has a locked rear and has the HG49 ratio rather than my HG43's. The rear is supposed to be able to just swap out the pumpkins but I knew I had to install the new front diff. I got the entire set-up for $1,050 delivered to my drive way. Am I screwed on this or can I do it as advised? nissandoms47
You're screwed. Reason why is because the xterra uses a low pinion front diff and the R50 uses a high pinion front diff. They mount totally different and im sure the "locked" only means limited slip.

Well, I should be able to cancel the order easily enough but still have to find some better gears for my rig. The search continues.
nissandoms47
Just find some 4.6 gears out of a 96-00 Qx4 or Pathfinder SE.
sammyb33
ok. i understand the Pathy is a HP axle, but even so, the mounts wont mount up perfectly, but shouldnt it still work, i mean the drive shaft will just be at a little steeper of an angle, but still should be useable right? i mean that makes sense to me, but not knowing much about r50s and how their front axle mounts i wouldnt know about it. vengeful
The ring and pinion gears were reverse cut on the high-pinion axles.
tmorgan4
As for swapping out the entire R200 with the Xterra unit is obviously possible, but I'm not sure if it's the same width. I can either try looking at my friend's Xterra or have someone try and measure the width of the front differential on an Xterra. CVs will be a problem if they're different widths. I will just wait til I can find the right gears from another R50 or QX4. Thanks for all the info.
nissandoms47
Tyler dont you still have that unit from the pathfinder? Measure that because they're the same housing that was used in the xterra/frontier.
RWC5S2
Well, I got lucky. The place that was selling me the Xterra diff's had a 2003 Pathfinder with the 4:6 gears and locked rear, which is most likely a LS but, what the heck, it beats the grocery getter 4:3 that came in the rig. Also beats the open/open I am now running. Thanks again to all for the assist and saving my old fart butt from making a major blunder.
nissandoms47
You sure it has 4.6s? All VQs that I know of came with 4.3s. But im not too sure about the rare 5 speeds. Make sure they double check the tag in the engine bay.
RWC5S2
Well, I specifically asked for the HG46 and was told that was the one they had. They came out of a Pathfinder, not a VQ. I know most of the Pathfinders came with a 4:6 except for the grocery getter 4:3 which is what I had. Geez, all this trouble. Maybe I should have bought a Jeep? Nawww, they ride like crap and I deserve the creature comforts at my advanced age. Besides, my R50 keeps on freaking out the Jeep guys. They can't believe I can do 98% of all the junk they do. I must admit I do enjoy getting thru some evil stuff and see a Jeep have to take the "strap". Just makes me feel warm all over.
nissandoms47
Oh lol well you said 2003 pathfinder which only comes equipped with the VQ.
RWC5S2
Ok, I must not know what a VQ is. I was thinking of a Infiniti being a VQ.
Simon
3.3L engine is a VG 3.5L engine is a VQ From 2001 and up, Nissan used the 3.5L VQ engine in Pathfinders.
