home made jack stand

Has anyone fabricated and used a home made jackstand like welding on 2 spare rims together?

I got this idea from the junkyard. Its a couple of 12 spare tire one without the tires and the one with tires acts as the base and t'd together by welding it.

it looks much safer to use if youre working on a gravel or dirt driveway. I tried using one of those heavy duty stand before on gravel and it just sinks in on the gravel making it unsafe

I was tugging on the pathy that was on all 4 of those and it would not move. the thing I like about those is where you can set the frame in between the rim lip. I think Im going to pick 4 and just have it welded.

How is that animal doing that? There must be a camera in here...I'm going to find it if I have to......well, when I find you and your pesky pet I'll know who is behind all of this and then you will pay! lol :) oh and what happened to putting a couple of fat kids from around the neighborhood under the vehicle? Or was I the only one doing this? :hide:

Let me get this straight. You want to skip out on using safe jack stands on a solid concrete surface, and instead use some rims welded together so you can roll around in gravel?? And yes, the yards use them here, and no, you don't find me rolling around under them there either.

If we have a concrete flooring you bet id rather use a jack stand but in my case since we have gravel I just feel that its safer to use that fabricated rims. The legs arent going to dig in on the gravel surface

If you look how big the base is on those compared to a heavy duty jack stand , the frame can sit in a wide area between the rim lip and besides I dont have any plan on crawling underneath and roll around gravel. I just need this to do my CV and probably change my uca's but doing my rear coil swap heck no im not crawling under there even if it was on concrete with jack stand

Yeah I was just going prop the front to do the cv and if time allows ill do the uca and shocks. Seems pretty easy when I was removing them from the junkyard. ill give it a good soaking of pb the night before.

I agree that they would be more stable than jackstands.

The negatives are lack of adjustability, their weight, and how much space they require to store.

adjustability does pose a bit of a prolem.Im going to need to get a 3 ton jack so that I can raise the truck up high enough to put this things under the frame. Not quite sure what the height is on this but im heading out to the junkyard again sometimes this week and measure it.

I know in the junkyard they use forklift to lift those rigs up
