Dimmer switch gremlins

the backlighting in my dash has a mind of its own.. when you first turn the headlights on ( sometimes) the dimmer lights come on dim, 5- 30 seconds.. sometimes 5 min.. then bright.. also the dimmer adjust knob dosent do anything.. vibration dosent fix it either. beating on the dash, doing 65 on a bumpy hiney dirt trail at night.. nothing helps... GREMLINS

It may be something in the swtich try getting a new one at the junk yard. Also try the fuse and or ground wire.

Your potentiometer in the dimmer switch is fried, stuck in the same position, but not very well... Needs a new one. That's my take on things.

Potentiometer? Similar concept as a rheostat? As in, variable switch.

Eeeh, I think you have the proper term for the device in question. I'm used to messing with pots, so that was the term that came to mind at first. My bad!

It sounds correct, I believe. Rheostat would be the term in residential electrical work, i.e. a dimmer switch for alight or a thermostat for your heater.
