Manual Transmission oil change...

I have a 1994 XE with a 5 Speed manual... Don't think the fluids have ever been changed in the driveline during its 185000 kilometers, so I'm thinking it's time. I don't have the owners manual in front of me but I assume that the fluid specifications will be in there...

Somewhere along the way I read a post about there being a defect in either the transfer case or the transmission and that you can't get the correct amount of oil into it... can someone clarify that for me? Any other surprises I should know about? Anything I should stay away from? Any other interesting recomendations?

Thanks in advance

The manual trans had the filler hole too low. To get around this, you can either tip the truck or fill through the shifter.

You want a GL4 transmission oil. Make sure it is NOT a GL5. I used Redline MT-90. As for the transfer case, you can use ATF. I used Amsoil ATF in mine.

i also use MT-90. just did it bout 2 months ago. pull the shifter boot (the mian one for both shifters) and there is a snap ring for the shifter.... CAREFULLY pop the little bugger and remember which way the shifter came out, cuz if you don't get it back in as it came out you can have issues..... fill away (5 qts) and then replace -bounce-

ps: i know someone did a write up about it... maybe check the "how to's " section in the garage :aok: i think it was grimgreg (ryan)

okay... I'll try to find this write-up... that sounds like what I need to do exactly... I'm hell on wheels with a pair of snap-ring pliers...lol... seriously, that doens't sound so bad if I can get the how-to

just out of curiosity, is this "filler plug located too low on the manual tranny casing" true with any other years? mine is a 1990 5-speed and I use Redline MT-90 also but it has been a few years since I changed it....hell I only put 29,000 miles on it in over 4 years! (hey I work from home....no commuting) but I cant recall if it took 5 quarts or just what the manual says.

Red line is good stuff in my book.

Everyone who has a 1986.5 to 1995 4wd Truck or 1987-1995 4wd Pathfinder should be aware that the FS5R30A manual transmission up until 1995 does not provide adequate lubrication to the main and counter drive gears.

from the TSB post by madkiwi in the old tech section, so yes that would include your 1990 pathy

wouldn't it be more like 4 quarts for manual 4x4 transmission? Nissan calls for

7 5/8 pints which equals about 4 quarts.

If you over fill wouldn't you run the risk of blowing a seal? or are they also saying that not only is the fill plug too low, but the amount of fluid the specs call for is also inadequate....so put 5 quarts in instead of 4?

it's no "overfill" to put 5 qts in cuz basically, with 4 you're getting inadequate lubrication anyway, which is the same as "underfill". ;)
