Surging after a tune up

Hello all. WAVEY

 

Just got done doing a tune up on my 93 pathy yesterday and this morning on my way to work she started surging like its running out of gas but after driving for about 10 mins it ran fine. This surging didnt happen before I did the tune up.Replaced all the plugs..cap and rotor and cleaned and reoiled my K&N.

 

Im planning on doing the timing tomorrow and hope that helps.

 

Could it be a bad 02 sensor? Could that rotten egg smell a sign of bad sensor coz one time I had my rear hatch window open and I can really smell it?

Check for loose or damaged vacuum lines.

 

The smell would be a bad Cat Converter... which could have been caused by an O2 that has been bad for a while... either way, replace both. (would be a good time to replace the muffler as well)

Thanks Redpath. I wil check my vacuum hoses tomorrow morning.Im also hearing a hissing noise for quite sometime now. Its around the plenum area.Any idea what thaT COULD BE?

 

The cat converter is still in great shape according to Midas when i had my muffler replaced just a year ago. ill have it checked again.

 

Where can I find the 02 sensor? Can that be accessed from underneath the truck without having to put it in a hoist or lift?

Yes, the O2 sensor is right before the cat. Easy to access, but quite possibly not that easy to remove. They can seize in there quite well at times.

on my 1990 VG30E engine, there is a little vacuum line at the very back of the plenum, right about over where that hard to get to spark plug is. Its a short hose that connects down below a few inches. It's easy to knock it off when changing the spark plug back there. I know because I just did mine last week and car was idling pretty crappy so when I got home I popped the hood and sure enough...I had knocked it off. It was cracked and dryrotted on one end also so I just replaced it. Runs much better now.

 

About to change my 02 sensor too....dont think it has ever been changed so I am hoping for the best with breaking it loose from the exhaust. Easy to get to, but on mine the wire harness is really long and snakes its way up around the tranny and into the engine compartment. No wonder it still cost $100.00....its all the dang wire! :)

 

Oh and Midas....Ummm...at least the one here in my town, worst shop around. They scammed me with gasket replacements (just shoved them inbetween the pipes and put cement around them. Never bothered to unbolt anything. Took vehicle back to show the dumbasses and they said the tech that did that is now a MANAGER at another location. "Gee...go figure!" I said. For an alignemnt job, they said mine was fine at the time, but a REAL shop later said "oh its off most definitly....thats why your tires are wearing on the insides.

I wanted a higher performance muffler that THEY SOLD, but they wouldnt put it on because it required "a little more work" to install it.

 

I gave up on midas.

Has your truck"surged" anymore since that first time? If not maybe it was the oil from your K&N getting sucked up into the TB? IF you put too much oil I hear it will screw some things up like the MAF sensor. Just a thought.

The K&N was cleaned a few days before i did the tune up.

 

I will be checking for some loose vacuum hose tho coz when I was installing that no.6 plug I was all over the top of my motor . It was like I was giving that motor some loving..hahaha

I would still check your MAf and your throttle body because they are easier to check then searching vacumm lines but to everybody their own. The only time i have changed the plugs on my truck was when I was changing the t-belt so I had the front end of the motor out so I stood in the engine bay where the radiator goes and leaned way over, it still sucked.

Everything checked ok and I cleaned the throttle body too..Theres not much buildup of gunk in there.I mustve only used half a can of the STP TBI cleaner.

I also cleaned the valve (not sure what its called) just on the right side of that throttle body.Its the one that has 2 10MM bolt with a vacuum hose connected at the top of the valve and a pipe connected to it

Howdy Red. Is there a way of checking to see if the 02 sensor is bad?

 

Replaced the plugs with NGK so as the wires..Caps and rotor but this pathy runs the way it did before even after replacing everything.

 

 

As a matter of fact it ran better before :angry: I also did a complete oil change on the motor ..diffs..tranny and Tcase.

 

 

Theres that gargling sound when I punch the gas and the power is just not there. I might recheck the timing.

 

 

I also reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery negative and let it sit for a good 2 hours.

 

 

 

Am i missing anything on this tune up?

Did you pull the codes from the ECU before clearing it? It will show a trouble code if the O2 is bad (bad enough to trip the code anyway)

 

Did you inspect that vacuum line for damage? even a pin hole can mess things up.

I have not done that.I always thought that itll give me a check engine light if thats bad. Ill check it first thing in the morning..Thanks man

Sure enough that vacuum hose was disconnected.I plugged it back and noticed a bit of change.

yes, you will use mode one on your ECU. check in the how too's(in the garage) for a better description.

Hmm I did not note the year of your rig, if 93's have a check engine light (which iirc all VG30E's do) then it should trip the light afaik.

saw that you were reading the how too, but just incase you missed it,

 

Use Mode I to determine if the Oxygen Sensor is functioning properly.

 

Warm the engine to normal temperature.

Run the engine above 2000 RPM under no load while looking at the ECU.

Make sure the GREEN LED goes on and off more than five times during ten seconds at 2000 RPM.

If the number of flashes are not more than five, replace the oxygen sensor. If the LED does not flash, check the sensor's circuit.
