1989 Pathfinder will not start

1st post.

 

I have a great '89 Pathfinder 4X4. Love this thing. It does everything I ask of it and then sometimes more.

 

Parked it a few weeks ago and next time I went to start it no joy. Sprayed some starting fluid in the air cleaner and it would run briefly. Replaced the fuel filter and when I turned the key on I noticed no fuel. The fuel pump relay clicked, but no juice to the pump. Fuses check out OK. Removed the fuel pump and checked voltage to the leads and had no voltage. Jumped to the positive terminal on the fuel pump and the pump did run, so that was good news.

 

My next item to check was the inertia switch, but cannot find where it is. Does it sound like I am on the correct track, or is there something else I am missing.

did you happen to replace the relay and test it? it could possibly be clicking and not engaging? just a thought...

I live in Apex, NC.

 

Yes, I have checked the fuel pump relay and when 12V is applied to the coil, it clicks and the switch closes. There is 12V to the terminal, but no power to the pump. That why I was wondering if there was an inertial switch to check.

hmm...get some wire long enough to run to the pump and just lay it across the seats and what not from the relay and slice it right into the fuel pump and see if that works maybe a wire rubbed thru or something and some how didnt pop a fuse...

There is no inertia switch. Try the pump relay first, then you can eliminate other things.

Right, I live in the Raleigh area.

 

I might have to just run a new wire to the fuel pump then. Darn.

Thanks. I have checked the relay, fuses, and hot wired the pump. All seem to work. I'll try running a jumper wire from the relay to the pump and see if I broke a wire or something.

I was looking at parts list for the fuel injection system and noticed it mentions a pressure switch? Where is this and what does it do? Could a bad switch cause this to happen?

I don't believe the VG30i-equipped models have one. My 88 FSM says nothing about one. IIRC, the fuel pressure switch is inside the tank with the sending unit.

OK, Finally got her running again. Ended up running a new wire from the relay to the fuel pump.
