Camshaft Position Sensor

Recently, my 1999 Pathfinder started hesitating and having trouble staying running at all. A buddy with a diagnostic computer hooked it up and the result came back that I needed a new camshaft position sensor.

 

The part number is 23731-1S700 and I have already obtained one.

 

My problem is that I have no idea where this part is located. Someone suggested that I could find it in my distributor, but I dismantled that and still can't find anything resembling the part I have.

 

I've read that some models have 2 of these sensors, but every parts person I have talked to has told me that the 1999 only has one of these sensors and that I have the correct part.

 

Any help would be appreciated. If I could get even a general idea of where this part is I could probably solve this.

 

I live on an island in the Caribbean, so going to a Nissan dealer is not an option.

First of all, welcome aboard!

Thanks for the quick reply. I've read the manual and am now completely confused.

 

My diagnostic listed the problem as the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS). When I talked to a parts person in the States they gave me the part number as 23731-1S700.

 

When I read the manual the part that corresponds to the CMPS is on page 288 and I've attached the description.

 

I interpret the sentence, "The distributor is not repairable and must be replaced as an assembly" as there is no use buying a new CMPS since it is a part of the distrubutor and the distributor is not repairable.

 

My question is why sell this part at all? It seems like I wasted money on this and what I need to replace is the entire distributor.

 

Does anyone have any experience actually repairing one of these things?

Deadend.

 

Whatever part I bought is not located inside of the distributor as the FSM describes.

 

There is something kooky with the parts numbers and naming going on.

 

I've decided to just order a new distributor. We'll see how that goes!

Are you sure you didn't end up purchasing the CRANKSHAFT position sensor?

I don't think so.

 

All of the Nissan parts dealers that I spoke to knew the difference and confirmed that I had the correct part.
