  1. $236 and change for crappy rebuilts. When the core chare is refunded, it will be less than $200. I can't justify paying for new parts on a 20yr old ride.

Starter was $100 last week, still need to replace plugs, wires, distributor. It's almost equal to my wife's monthy car note.

Otherwise it's been running w/ no problems for almost a year now. You can only ride for free for so long. :)

  2. Guess what, I drove to work this morning with only one headlight. J/y switches don't last long.

my truck did the same thing. it would have 12v at the conector but with the bulb in. the voltage would drop like a brick to like 2v. i made a relay for each power wire and used the 2v. out of the old harnes as a signal for the relay. it worked. i used two fog light relays. getting power from the battery. use a fuse inline with your power wire will save you a melt down. lol...just an idea..

That sounds like a good idea.

  3. Thanks, it had to be a stupid question, but it was just in my head the master cylinder wasn't that small.

I'm going to try to get thru the week just adding brake fluid if I can. Sounds like another fun w/end under the hood.

I've been losing break fluid over the last month and heard a hissing noise this weekend. ran my fingers under the reservoir and could feel the leak. My question is this. is there a gasket between the reservoir and the master cylinder that will repair the leak, or does everything need to be replace.

I am a poor mechanic and some need some help on names. I know what the reservoir is, but I dont know what the piece is called that the reservoir sits on. I believe the master cylinder is behind the black boot on the right. If someone has the time to explain how the leg bone attaches to the thigh bone and what the correct names, I'd appreciate the lesson.

    Thanks, Dag

  5. Advanced Auto treated me really good this weekend and thought everyone should know and hopefully experience good service.

Got a new starter for the '87 but overtightened the post to the solenoid. Cracked and destroyed it. Took it back to advanced and told him the whole sad story. He was out of starters so found one at another store close by. I went over to get it, in the meantime he called the manager and told him the story. When I got to the store the manager gave me the MWS lecture on overtightening then swapped out the starter for free!

He really cut me a break, because he could have just sold me a new starter.

So to return the favor, I just wanted to share the experience and hope they treat everyone here as well as they treated me.

Didn't mean to pick on you MWS, you do go off on overtightening. Buy you're right! Thanks and next time I'll listen.

  6. No start this morning, will be swapping starters from the parts car tonight. (and feed the Mosquitos). I got it to crank yesterday by bumping the starter. Hoped this would get me to the weekend. Sometimes one bump is all you get i guess?

    EDIT:

Crap! :P '92 connectors on starter are different than my '87. That was a good waste of 2 hours. since I had it off, I sprayed the plug contacts with cleaner hoping maybe I got some corrosion, but no good. No start. I'll be bumming the mini-van from the fuming wife til Friday.

Thought there was a how-to, but there are 4-5 screws on the bottom of your steering wheel cover to remove. The switch is held in place by two additional screws.

mine has been replaced twice w/ j/yard switches. Paid $10 each time, but they only last a year or two b4 you have to do it again.

You don't need a perfect match. The one I have now has a cruise control switch where my truck doesnt. Just cut that wire and lights work fine. The 1st donor switch came from a Hardbody P/up.

If you go that route, take your switch to the junkyard so you can make sure the mounting bolts and contacts line up.

  8. I have always wanted to brew up some shine but never really have the place to do it...we tried a 5 gallon bucket set up in college and it didnt work...i love some strawberry shine tho...good thing the race is only a week away...

  9. Too cool! Nice story.

If Rats are that close to his house and garage, there are more of them. Better at least D-con inside and out.

I didn't take care of some mice in my shed, it didn't take long for them to discover the house wasn't a bad place to live either. It takes a couple of weeks for the poison to kick in, but they die fast.

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. I am homebrewing my own beer now. I am on my 3rd batch. I am presently waiting on a batch of Nut brown ale similar to New Castle (I am hoping). My next batch is going to be a raspberry wheat. Mainly because my wife has always liked raspberry wheat beers.

Great! I've never tried beer. The people I talked too and what I've read always emphasized sterilization. I'm not what you call a "careful person" so it makes me afraid that I might ruin it with a dirty spoon or something.

Have your brews been successful? How closely do you follow directions and order of operations?

If my strawberry turns out okay, perhaps we can do swap!

  11. Oh, good. I was concerned that even I had underestimated how stupid people could be...

Remember that post last year where someone made a General Lee replica out of a '83 Nova (or something like that). It sold on E-bay for $5000. The seller lived like 3 miles from my house.

  12. I didn't want to get into that part, but when you rack your wine for the first time, you can take all the pulp and start a second ferment. Strawberry Shine and coke when done right taste just like a shirley temple.

Years ago you could buy stills on E-bay, they're kinda of hard to find lately. Don't know if its ebay rules or what.

I'm planning a poser pic for June TOTM. It'll be interesting.

  13. Jack away man, it was just a conversation starter anyway.

I use a dry wine yeast called Red Star Montachet. it's $2 bucks a pack and will ferment 5 gallons. I've made Strawberry wine with brewers yeast from Walmart. I can't really tell the difference personally, b/c I'm not a professional and it's usually pretty sweet anyway.

I do know the brewers yeast has a strong odor, almost funky mold, where the wine yeast is softer like a wet cornmeal smell. That will affect the taste, but in the wine making process the yeast falls to the bottom after it dies.

This batch I cut back on the sugar, supposed to use 12lbs for 5 gallons, but this will be 10lbs for 6 gallons. I'm interested to what it is like semi-dry.

Professionals in general don't acknowledge anything as wine unless it came from a grape. Even if civilization was making wine at the same time they were drawing pictures in the dirt with sticks.

  14. If you don't have grapes you can buy them canned from wine suppliers on-line. From what I've read, the canned grapes are 2nds that have been rejected by the winery's.

I've bought canned blueberries from a wine supplier as a novelty and entertainment. It was actually good, but my yeast died on me and it didn't have much kick. I've been afraid of going after something more expensive like Merlot or Shiraz. You could easily spend close to a $100 and 2 or 3 months ending up w/ $2 wine.

It's easier to accept failure when it doesn't cost you a lot of money.

  15. i couldn't shift into 4 lo, only 4 hi,

Do you have a body lift?

Some folks have gotten lifts and had to notch out around the 4wd shifter b/c it was hitting the floor when going in 4lo after the lift.

  16. My Buddy at work got DUI he can only drive two hours a day. The hour b4 work and after. If he is on a street not enroute to work it is a violation and goes to jail to serve remainder of sentence. He also had rent a machine to attached to his ignition. He has to blow clean in a tester for the truck to start. He said with lawyer fees it's cost him 6 grand.

I'm sure she paid more than that just in attorney fees, it's nice to see high society get a taste of what it's like not to always have priviledge. Bonehead shoulda hired a driver.
