  1. I'm putting a new axle w/ electric brakes on my ATV trailer (used to haul my ATVs that is). In order for them to work I need to install a brake controller in my 2003 Pathfinder. Can anyone tell me how hard (or easy) it is to install a brake controller in my vehicle? Thanks! jim
  2. I replaced the factory plastic parts about four times before I decided to find a better solution. I used two split rings (metal). I threaded the first ring to the second ring and then one end to the lock and one end to the lock cylinder. I don't think they'll ever die.
  3. In my experience vibrations that occur between 55 and 65 are almost always a rear-wheels balancing problem. I'd take it back to where they were balanced, explain the problem, and ask them to check the balance again. I've never had a shop deny that service and it has almost always corrected the problem. Let us know. jim
  4. Thanks for all the input. I'll take this project on before it gets too cold. jim
  5. Can anyone tell me what the steps are to change transmission fluid in a 2003 SE Pathfinder (Automatic)? I did a search and didn't get any results that answered the question. Does this tranny have a filter? Anything special that needs to be done, or any special tools required? I assume the necessary fluid is listed in the owner's manual. Any other suggestions? Thanks all, jim
  6. I bought adjustable shocks from my local Nissan dealer and the price was quite reasonable (about $100 for all four shocks if my memory is right). My ride is an '89 Pathfinder SE. There are probably some better "aftermarket" shocks available, but the stock Nissan ones meet all my needs. I think the electric connector just operates a small solenoid to increase or decrease shock damping. Good luck, jim
  7. Take a look at the Air Lift products too. I just bought a set for my '03 SE to help level the load when I'm pulling a trailer. They claim it adds up to 1,000 lbs, capacity. Haven't installed them yet but I'm expecting good things from them. My set was $69 from Summit Racing (I didn't get the compressor model as I have a portable, 12 volt compressor I can take with me). just a thought. jim
  8. Does anyone know who actually manufactures "crazy carpet"? I've tried to find a name through "Google" but nothing is showing up. Any help would be appreciated. jim
  9. The Kid's "Crazy Carpet" sounds like a good possibility. I'll stop by Wally World tonight and see if they have it, or something like it. If I can't find anything, I might be interested in the ones from the "88. Thanks all. Good info here. jim
  10. My 89 SE Pathfinder had two pieces of flexible material that went between the wheel well and the engine compartment (one piece on each side of the vehicle). The material feels like a cross between paperboard and rubber. It's somewhat flexible and yet strong enough to withstand the stresses of riding in the wheel wells. I want to replace it, but the dealer wants $52.00 each for them and that seems a little high to me (like about $40.00 each too high). Has anybody found a substitute for these factory skirts (or whatever they're called)? I was thinking about cutting them out of some inner tubes but I don't think that would last very long (inner tubes seem to be junk anymore). Anyway, I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks, jim
  11. I have an '89 Pathfinder SE V6 that is in need of some replacement fuel line. Since it's an injected engine, NAPA told me it needs "injected" fuel line. I cut a small piece off and took it in to NAPA with me. By looking at it it appears that 1/4" is too small ans 5/16" is too large. I'm guessing (with the help of a micrometer) that what I need is 8mm (metric) injected fuel line. My dealer doesn't carry it ("We just run out to NAPA and buy it"); NAPA doesn't carry metric sizes (at least not in the town I live in) and there aren't any foreign car parts places around here. The first dealer couldn't even tell me what size fuel line I need. Second dealer asked for a VIN to figure it out (I haven't gotten back to him yet. Nissan National Customer Service said, "We don't offer tech support, we rely on our dealers to do that.") That doesn't make a four-Nissan vehicles owner real happy, especially when the dealer can't tell me what size line I need. Anyone actuall know what size the fuel line is and where I might be able to get it? Thanks all. jim
  12. How do you know if your truck has the filter or not? I bought mine used (a 2003 SE) but never saw the original "sticker." Thanks, jim
  13. That's pretty clear. Is there an easy way to identify an Eplorer with the tow package or do you just have to get underneath them and look? Where are their coolers actualy located on the stock model? Thanks, jim
  14. But, as I understand it, there are no Hubs that can be put on the 2003 Pathfinder. Is that correct? I'd prefer to have manual hubs as the times that I need 4 X 4 drive is, by far, the exception rather than the rule. Therefore it would be nice to be able to improve my mileage while reducing wear and tear on the equipment. With gas currently at $2.27 (87 octane) a gallon, any savings are worthy of consideration. jim
  15. I wrote to Warn. They don't make, or intend (as of now) to make any sort of manual hub for the 2003 model. However, from what I read here, it appears that I may have "flanges" instead of "hubs." So uhh... what's the difference? Thanks, jim
  16. Since it's obvious you know a lot more about this than I do, have you "posted" the process anywhere? I'd like to make sure my tranny stays cool, but I don't want to make a dumb mistake in doing so. Thanks, jim
  17. 88pathoffroad said: Can someone recommend a source and model for the Hayden cooler mentioned above? I live in Northern Nevada and pull a trailer with two jetskis. A cooler would probably be a smart investment. A "complete kit" and "relatively easy to install" are also good things . Thanks, jim
  18. Are the manual hubs of any value on a 2003 Pathfinder? If you're getting roughly 10% better mileage I'd think it would also contribute to better longevity for the drive train. jim
  19. Northern Nevada (Reno area) Costco $1.97 To $2.16 Cars are bad, but I have a jet ski that will go through 15 gallons in a little over an hour at wide-open-throttle. I usually go through 20 gallons a day just playing. This may be a very expensive summer.
  20. Can anybody tell me what the specific "model" of Iridium NGK plug used on a 2003 SE Pathfinder is? Thanks, jim
  21. One last piece of info. It turns out, per my machinist, that the reason I couldn't drill a hole in the stud is that someone had tried before me and broken off a piece of tool-steel in it. Probably a drill bit. I couldn't see it but that would explain my difficulties. He charged me $25.00 to remove the two broken studs and put a helicoil in the one I had screwed up. Money well spent. Now all I have to do is put this darn thing back together. Between the weather , other interests, and lack of interest its been about eight weeks since I started taking it apart. Hope I can find all the pieces. jim
  22. I talked to the machinest who I asked to get the broken studs out. He said the "mystery rings" are used as indexing posts when I put the part that goes on top of the head back on. I apologize for my ignorance, but I think its part of the lifters system, I just don't know the correct terminology. Bottom line is, the MRs (mystery rings) go exactly where I have marked in the photos accompanying my original post. He said two of the bolts will go right through them. Makes sense once somebody knows and explains it to you. Hope this is of some help to others. Thanks to all of you for your input. jim (never taking a head off again ) anderson
