There you go. Gotta keep the wife happy.

Love the link Citron!! For overnighters we've often been lazy with either Starbucks Via or just some of that bottled/canned cold Stumptown Coffee we have here in the NW (I don't know if it gets distributed elsewhere). Both are okay but we've been looking at 9-12 cup Percolators to try out - any suggestions?

OKAY, sorry, I realize Citron's little joke has just hijacked the thread-what do you want, Coffee is ADDICTIVE!!! If you live the NW, you really can't escape it. Even 20 years ago, you could be in the middle of nowhere and find an outhouse sized shack that was serving lattes!

  2. With regard to that driver's side wheel well space, I saw a rig walk around of a Nissan Patrol in Australia by Michael on Overland Bound where the Patrol owner said he put a fairly high capacity water bladder in there. He indicated that was a pretty common practice in Australia and that they had several ready made products for that application. I've been wanting to run that down. Maybe one of the Australians on this forum could fill us in. I was going to pursue through that Patrol owner & maybe PCoA or the Australian R50 FB site.

  3. As for your bumper. I've been waiting a year and a half after a fender bender (I took plenty of pictures at this one) to find a good offroad bumper for my R50. I may have a lead on a guy in Vancouver BC who would like to use my rig as a model to generate a new bumper for our truck OR another NPORA member is considering making one as well.

  4. Like TownDawgR50 said, DashCams can be usefull. I found a highly rated one for only $80.

There are worse stories to tell. A handful of years ago I was the target of an insurance scam. The guy simply slammed on his brakes in the middle of a road. I was driving my 1993 Maxima SE and the antilocks allowed me to steer to the side with only a palm sized scuff below the midline of the right side of his Jetta bumper. I told State Farm the whole thing was suspicous and convinced them to take photos before I had the car repaired as the minor damage to my Maxima should have shown it was no big deal. (I was too stupid to take pictures of his car at the time). A month before the statuate of limitations he filed a suit against me and against another driver whom he had an accident with a year later. They started at about $900,000 in damages. It took almost 2 years with lawyers, depositions and anxiety before it was settled. They pushed the trial date back twice and he ultimately settled with my insurance for $50K and the other car from the other accient for $25K. There were many times I sat there and couldn't believe it was happening. As I sat in a deposition I realized that everyone involved in me didn't really care that this kind of BS happened and that they either made a living from it or passed the cost on to the customer. When my deposition shot holes in his story, they just came back & changed the location of the accident by several hundred feet. I couldn't believe it but my lawyer said it wasn't even worth fighting as there was not way to prove it. I was told that photos of damages are often not allowed in court but I do think that the photos of the site of the accident would have helped in this instance.

Since then, I have witnessed an accident where a guy just turn left into a car ahead of me and even ended up rolling his truck. I offered my name to the victim and police as a witness. Later the guy who hit her tried to completely change his story. I offered photos of where everything was from sittng in my driver's seat. The victim later called to thank me as the photos clearly disproved his modified story and his insurance company accepted liability.

A long story short, I figured an $80 dash cam was a good prophylactic investment!

  5. BTW, We've axed the GX option as the rear seats fold up inefficiently. Even my short Mom can't fit back there with them folded. We would have to remove the 60% seat section which means that she would only have one rear seat if she needed it. She likes to drive all around the West but stop by and take the Grandkids around when she get here which wouldn't be possible if the full rear seats weren't in it. Also, in the PacNW, the side swing door is big negative-you really need the swing up for weather cover here.

  6. Wow, it looks great. I really like what you've done. Using the vertical space, allowing access to the under floor bin and, above all else, the ability to remove it. The last is critical to me as my truck is currently full of 10 ft flashing I'm using to redo my wood shed roof. I've loved the idea of drawers but I use the interior of my truck for hauling all the time-your solution is excellent. I really like your ability to convert to an empty interior relatively easily plus it acts as a barrier in case of accident as well as stacked storage! The fold out work space is a nice touch too. Awesome Job!!

  7. For Your Judgement!

Okay, well, I think just about everybody knows I’ve been looking for a bumper to kickstart my build. I think I may have an answer and I am curious for input.

I don’t really want the ARB Sahara Bar as it is heavy and looks a little dated to me. I really like this one that Andrew(aka enjoi408) had made for his rig http://rockandroadperformance.com/plate-bumper-process. Unfortunately, they didn’t save their jigs and I would have to bring the truck to Sacramento to get it done again. I even tried buying Andrew's bumper off him when his rig just recently was in an unfortunate 4 car accident which sadly ended it’s life (someone else beat me to the bumper-probably someone else on NPORA).

I considered welding an XJ bumper on like ExBrit & TownDawgR50 but I haven’t been able to find anyone to do it.

Finally, a query to Brandon at Coastal Offroad hit paydirt. He makes bumpers for 4Runners, Tacomas, Frontiers & XTerras. He would like to offer an R50 bumper but he needs a rig for a model. He works out of Victoria & Vancouver BC and I may just drive my truck up there and have him do it. I’m curious to get input on his design and any critiques / recommendations you might have. I plan on mounting a Smittybilt X20 98510 or 98512 winch and I want the center hoop. I’m currently undecided about the lateral hoops. Aesthetically, they seem a little overwhelming but they would definitely protect me from the trees up here in the NW plus it would give me a mounting point for limb risers which would also be usefull in our woods.

Here is his website and some posts over on the T4R forum. Let the opinions begin!!

  8. Oh YEAH!!! Thanks jjonez. Your pix are very encouraging. I really like the extra support the fender washers give it. I might even think about some strapping or something to add just a little more support. Kyle (ferrariowner123) very graciously gave me his old swingate and now I'm just looking for the bumper latch plates (he had the guide) and the pull release mechanism!

  9. I know this an ancient thread BUT, I'm about to do my lift & just realized I'll need new strut mount & bearings. I'm planning on @fleury's 1" spacer with OME struts & OME HD springs in front & either the same in back or AC springs as the OME only come in MD-likely Bilstein 51s in the rear if I use AC springs. I have been advised I likely won't need or want the 1" spacer in back if I use AC springs. Moog K90301 has been recommended to me for the strut mount. Any recommendations on strut bearings & am I missing anything(already planning on camber bolts, upper & lower rear links & a panhard & rear AirLift 1000s). I'll have somebody do it for me 2* my inexperience with springs & compressors & I've heard you often have to cut the old links off. My goal is to get the right parts & do it all at once after I get a plate bumper & winch installed)

The family voted for Olympic/Kitsap this last weekend. I gave the rooftop Plano case thing a try & really liked it. I think it will make it easier to get out of town faster & with our weather it's nice that you can just leave it on the ground with the top on & then load it wet & dirty when you move. Now to get a more expedition like rack stead of the little Yakima basket I have mounted to my rails between my load bars. I also would love to know if a Baja or Gobi hatch mounted roof ladder for a G3 4Runner would work on an R50.

  11. Doubt Virgil will reply (he went to the dark side some time ago, lol)...but it's a Firestik SS-204A mount, about $20 on eBay, Amazon, etc.

Well, I'll put my antenna on my swingate like TownDawgR50 if I ever get that done but this looks like a smart interim. Of course, my CB's only 15 years old so it's probably time to upgrade that as well. Considering Ham but finding the time to study license won't be easy.

    Thanks agan hwairish!

  12. Hawairish, Thanks for the consideration & the info. I can definitely see a swingate being a persistent pain in a daily driver. My rig is essentially dedicated to camping, snow & mulch/dirt & hardware store hauling. I think I will appreciate the utility of the swingate. I am now digging back into overlanding & trail running after almost a decade break of family building. BTW, I saw your kiddos are a couple years younger than mine so kudos to you for persisting in getting out (though I lived in PHX about 3yrs a decade ago & it's hard not to go out when you live there-I have a handful of years experience in AZ, Southern UT, SW CO & Western NM from that time-LOVED IT!!). I undoubtedly will lean on Towndawg50 a little if/when I do the swingate but I'm not going to harass him, he's been very generous of his time with me offline. And thanks again to Kyle for his generosity as well as your own. Honestly, I love the sense of "community" that exists in these forums-that & the whole overlanding thing are really such nice developments in the culture over time. To me, it's a real counterpoint to the idea that screen time is depersonalizing.

  13. @jjonez: No, that crease is from something else. If I had to guess, I'd say the carrier was bumped into the chassis on that one. But on that truck the area is already reinforced. But for trucks without the carrier, the area where the holes are is thinner and it flexes inward a little there. That's where I have to aluminum to thicken it up a little.

@RainGoat: I've been meaning to hit up the JY near me...last time I was there, they had 2 or 3 R50s with some degree of carrier pieces. Not sure when I'll get there, but I can keep an eye out for them.

hawairish, That would be great. @ferrariowner123 is going to give me an extra carrier he has himself but it doesn't have the latches so it sounds like that's the main thing I need. I'm lucky, I believe both @TowndawgR50 and @ferrariowner123 have added the carrier to their rigs and they both live nearby so I may have some experienced advice in addition to your excellent posting! Thanks for looking out for me!!
