  1. So...here goes!! My Pathy (the Black 95 4WD XE) which is my faithful driver, decided to show me that the 223,850 miles on it are starting to wear at the engine a bit..but I honestly take a little bit of responsibility for what happened. First..Lessons learned... There is a Thread on here about proper oils to use in your VG30E Engine... Let's go by lessons learned. I normally ran 10W40 in mine ( I live in Phoenix, so it helps). When i started to get a few engine ticks, I dropped in a QT of Lucas when doing an oil change. BEst things ever for the engine. Every other oil change I would drop in the QT of Lucas, and on the opposite times I would drop in a little bit of Marvel Mystery Oil...That @!*% works wonders, if you've never used it before. Even a pint into the gas tanks helps every 10,000 miles. Anyway...I started to get a few ticks, and thought maybe I was starting to get a sticky lifter, so the last oil change I did before I went back to the midwest, I decided to drop in 10W30. Now I'm a HUGE fan of Mobil One...so there's my baseline...however, when I dropped in the lighter oil...the ticks resounded...so I was short on time...and left the 10W30 in...then left to drive back to the midwest...through Colorado...and over VAIL PASS... HUGE ASS MISTAKE. By the time I got to the east side of Colorado, the engine was making sounds I can't even describe to you...However...once I got it above 2500 RPM, the sounds stopped..Hmmm.. Got to my destination, drained the oil...fortunately, no glitter..Thank God...ruled out spun bearing...for now. Compression check...sitting at 165 on first cylinder, and between 160 and 170 on all the others...which is amazing for the engine having 222,000 miles on it at the time. So...we narrow it down to "lifters"? Hmm... noise coming from right bank..clickety clack..but stops at high RPMS... So I pull the valve cover, yank the lifters and the rockers...all good. Clean them, reinstall, and refill with 10W40 Mobil One and 2 qts of Lucas...YES...2 QTS of GEAR OIL, essentially...and there's still a light clackety clack, but far reduced...bear in mind... I have to drive this thing back to AZ in a week. So I test, I poke, I prod, and try different things...Then I price out Uhaul, Penske, etc...all over $1800 to drag the Pathy back to AZ. So the day comes to head home...and I roll the dice. 1534 miles and 19 hours of the engine running constantly, I roll into the driveway at home. Bear in mind...I limped her home...took it really easy, and the only REAL issue was going up the 6% grade at Casa Verde Mountain pass on I17 between Flagstaff and Phoenix. That almost killed it. Now...the engine didn't leak a SINGLE drop of oil during the entire trip. Oil level stayed perfect. (On the way there with the 10W30..lost almost a quart...) However..the clickety clackety sound is now the most horrific sound I've EVER heard from an engine. And when I backed her into the driveway, she gave her first indication that @!*% was about to go sideways... So...I just went to Top Tier Motors in Phoenix and picked up a VG33 with 55,000 miles on it for $700 (plus tax, came to $756). Now I'm about to spend the next 3 days doing the swap... I'm going to post as much as possible...step by step, so bear with me, and hopefully we'll all learn something along the way!! Wish me luck!! ~Hans
  2. UPDATE** Just dropped a cool grand on a set of new FALKEN WILDPEAK M/T's (33x12.5x15). Since I have the 3" body lift, the rears are just fine, but the fronts required some new shocks (way overdue anyway) and had to trim out a bit of the fenders. Going to drop in a Calmini 3" lift in about a month. Also yanked off the previous roof rack and installed the Xterra rack, as well as a few other mods. About to put a new front bumper/grill guard on this weekend, too. What are your thoughts? These tires and the different rims seriously changed the look of the truck.
  3. If it's running that high rpm at 45 to 50mph it's not shifting properly at all. Check to see if the overdrive is functioning properly.
  4. Mine went out without warning...just failed at 75mph on I10 outside of Lincoln, NE. Was less than fun.
  5. Had the same problem last winter... ended up to be the sensor on the distributor...after I had replaced almost every other sensor, cap, plug and electrical component... http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/42685-help-stranded-in-ne-with-my-inop-pathy/ If you can grab a dizzy out of a junk pathy, drop it in real quick and test it. ~Sas
  6. Has anyone here considered, or completed a cruise control transplant from one pathy (with cruise) to another pathy (without cruise)? If so...can you tell me what to expect? I'm looking at pulling the cruise from my 94 pathy that's about to become a side-by-side SUV cutaway to my 95 pathy daily driver. I've already gone through the wiring diagrams, and I'm trying to verify existing wiring harness and cannon plugs. Anyone every try this?
  7. Although on second thought..it may be tricky..forgot about your unibody and different bumper mounts...
  8. These are the two most common standard brushguards from my searches in the past... (This is the same one on my 95 Pathy) Ive seen both of these at salvage yards, and honestly, with some simple mods I would think you could get either of them to fit pretty easy.
  9. Ok..THAT rocks....Thanks for posting the spray on bed liner! Didn;t even think about it that way...was in tunnel vision to Autozone or Oreillys for rattle can or roll-on...
  10. There's actually just a fuse for the headlamps located in the engine compartment. Here are the Headlight and Tail light wiring diagrams... I haven't found a relay for the lamps anywhere on any of the diagrams. I just had to troubleshoot the headlamps on my wife's 93 Pathy last week, and everything ran straight from the switch through the lamps. I thought it was weird that I couldn't find a relay for them. I'll continue looking as well... Hope this helps! ~Hans
  11. Looking great! What's the cost on the Headers, and is that heat wrap on them, or just to keep them from getting dinged up on installation?
  12. We have settled on a basic build concept for this "Safari Pathy UTV" project... The intent it to yank off the doors and install (fabricate and install) Safari Doors like the one's pictured here...same concept... Lift will be a 4" body lift combined with a 4" Suspension Lift. Similar to this ride height... Looking at doing a fab and recreating this front bumper assembly... and the top is going to get chopped off like this and a full roll cage will be fabbed and installed
  13. Hey all! Ok, some of you started following my previous thread about the 93 Pathy that I picked up for $750 with the intent of cutting it apart and turning it into a UTV Side-by-Side. For others, the link is here...it's a quick thread showing a quick replacement of the entire dash and center console... http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/topic/43251-93-pathy-project-buildsuv-or-utvor-not/ Anyway, My wife decided that she REALLY likes this truck, so she has taken claim on it (since I already have another pathfinder) and she wants to keep the safari roof rack and have me add a number of "upgrades" to the truck...looks like we have a new pathfinder fan! As it turns out, I ended up picking up ANOTHER Pathfinder (1994, 4WD) last week...for $350. So, This Pathy will now become the UTV Side-by-Side!! The engine turned over at the point of purchase, but wouldn't start, and the battery was so dead that it wouldn't even take a charge. When I got it home i swapped out a battery and it cranked right up!! It ran like @!*%, but after listening to the engine, it's most likely an ignition issue. Either way, the engine is going to be overhauled, and probably get a VG33 block, or even a full engine swap to a VG33. We'll see. Needless to say, there will be a LOT of parts coming off this thing!! Here's a few pics of what it currently looks like! I call it my Ghetto Cruiser!! As a note...the standard Nissan Pathfinder Front Bumper does NOT hold up well to a towbar.... We ended up nearly tearing the whole front bumper off...then called a tow truck to get it to the house. Loving this custom hood paintjob!! 18" Rims ??
  14. Considering there are two different types...it may and may not....
  15. Here's a pic of mine with the tire carrier installed. Haven't had a single issue with it...and it's REALLY been nice to have, for those owners who haven't ever been without one!! Bear in mind this was a junkyard purchase for $30 and a quick sand down and a can of Gloss Black Rustoleum This is a random online pic showing the full carrier assy. I've discovered there are actually two version of the swing carrier. This is the standard version, and there is a shorter version. These are the locations of the holes I was talking about for the lock bracket and support bracket. If you have a pathy that doesn't have the tire carrier installed, look on your truck for 4 small dimples in these locations. If you use a 7/16" drill bit, it will drill through and the lock nut plates are already installed.
  16. As of today, May 14th, there are currently 4 pathys in Phoenix area salvage yards with tire swing racks on the back. They go for approx $29 to $40 depending on condition. I mounted on on my 95 pathy and it didn't have the mount plates above and below the right tail light. I set it, marked the hole locations and drilled it. Used nuts on the backside by going though the side access panel and used the bolts from the mount when removed from the other vehicle. The guide and lock bracket holes are standard on every pathy, and can be found by looking at the rear panel below the lift gate. You will see dimples where you drill the holes. The threaded brackets are behind it. I'll post pics showing the locations when I find them. If you want a swing mount, pm me asap. I can get one and ups slow boat ship it to you.
  17. <UPDATE: May 14th> Ran through three of the major salvage yards here in Phoenix today and didn't come across much of value. Got back home and finished the install of the new dash. Still going to have to do some minor stuff, but everything works as advertised, and I even swapped out the 1993 steering wheel with the steering wheel from the 94 I got on Friday. Have to fit the horn pad, but the pics show at least a bit more progress. The steering column cover that I brought from the junkyard is pretty screwed up, as most of them are I've found. I'm going to have to do some surgery on it so that it will work, otherwise I'll have to repaint the painted cover that was already on it...yeech. More pics coming...
  18. ***ADDITIONAL UPDATE: My wife decided that she REALLY likes this truck, so she has taken claim on it (since I already have another pathfinder) and she wants to keep the safari roof rack and have me add a number of "upgrades" to the truck along with the new dash and center console!! Now, normally I may have argued this point, but one of the people I was talking to about a different pathfinder called back yesterday and said they'd let their pathfinder go for an even lower price, so I ended up with ANOTHER Pathfinder (1994, 4WD) yesterday afternoon...for $350. So, THAT Pathy will become the UTV Side-by-Side!! I'll put together an additional Thread on THAT one since this one is already going a different direction! ~Hans
  19. UPDATE: Got started late on pulling the old dash, so I'll have to finish it in the am. Got the old dash out, and put the new one in for a fit check. All good, just have to swap the VIN plate in the morning as well. I've been shooting pics throughout the whole process, and I'm considering doing a complete thread just on removal and installation of the dash by itself. Let me know if there's any interest, and I'll start putting together the images. New Dash ("Newer", anyway..no cracks!) Installed just for a fit check. More to come tomorrow!! ~Hans
