  1. First of all, Sorry about the delay in updates. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. I put a timing light on it, and there is an arbitrary white mark on the crankshaft pulley. It is about 85deg after the 0tdc mark. I pulled the radiator and the fan out, and turned the crankshaft to 0tdc. Then I pulled the dizzy cap off and the rotor is at the #2 cyl position. Turns out I don't have a big enough socket to pull the crankshaft pulley off, so alas it will have to wait until Shuck's opens in the morning. I am so relieved to have found something. My main question now is how many teeth off would the belt have to be for it to advance almost a whole cylinder? I tried advancing all of the plug wires to compensate for it, but the engine wont even turn over. More updates tomorrow (and probably more questions) after I get the timing covers off. Indigent.
  2. I have checked the timing, but I can't see a definite timing mark. The shop that did the timing put an ambiguous white mark on the pulley, and i have no real idea if it is at 15btdc like it is supposed to be. Also, I can't get that white mark to line up with the 0deg mark post. How would I check the O2 sensor. I have a chilton's but it is one I bought in Japan, and it doesn't really say how to check the sensor. A buddy of mine said that on his pickup, he had to check for voltage there, but he doesn't seem to remember how much. The exhaust looks fine physically, but the last section of the pipe is moveable. I can literally shake it. It is the section just aft of the muffler. It actually looks like it is not really secured to the muffler itself. Would that cause my problems? The main thing I am concerned about is the exhaust pipe sucking. I am hoping it isn't a head. But the thing I don't get is that there isn't a real pattern to it. It is off beat, which suggests that it isn't just one valve, or that it isn't sticking all of the time. Thanks for the fast replies btw. indigent.
  3. Hey everyone. It has been a very long time since I have posted. I was in the Air Force stationed in Japan, but I am back in the States now. I had to get rid of my TD Terrano as I couldn't bring it back with me, but now I have a 91XE. I know very little about the VG30E's. I picked this pathy up for $1000 bucks. Body is in great shape, but the engine runs like crap. Most of the time it takes 8plus cranks to get it to start, and when it does, it just dies right away. When it is finally going at idle, it lopes really bad and dies sometimes. There is really bad fuel smelling smoke coming out of the exhaust, and when I stick a piece of paper in front of the tailpipe, it sucks it in every once and a while. There isn't any real rhythm to it, so I don't understand that. I put seafoam in the gas and in the oil and it started spitting out black liquid from the tailpipe. It runs slightly better on higher octane gas, but not much. Also sometimes there is a severe lack of power from stop, but it goes away when i reach about 25 mph. The previous owner said he just had the timing belt done a few months ago and that was when it started. I know it seems like a no-brainer to check it, but is there anything else it could be? I would like to figure out everything I could try before I go tearing into this thing as it is my daily driver. I have done all the tests, mode3 kicks out a 55. As a last resort, I increased the idle speed so it would quit dying. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I did search quite a bit, but all I found that was similar was this: http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?showto...l=valve+problem but there was no sollution. Indigent.
  4. Just remember though, you HAVE to be in Neutral and completely stopped to get it to go. At least thats how it is in my Terrano. If I have it in Park, and try to go to 4L, it wont budge. It goes smooth as silk when I have it in Neutral though.
  5. The brake pads and calipers for that matter, are the same part numbers between the VG30's and the TD27(t)'s here in Japan. So I would assume that the VG30's here are the exact same truck as the Pathy everywhere else.
  6. Turns out that my squealing problem wasn't coming from the front end at all!!! My rear left outboard brake pad has dissapeared!!!!!!! The pads were inspected during my JCI (Japanese Compulsory Inspection, basically like CA, but 10X more thorough), and all of my brake pads were in good condition and THERE. I looked at the rotor, and it has been severely worn down by the caliper's inside edge. That is what was making the grinding noise, and when I got my terrano up to speed, it was squealing. I could induce the squealing by turning sharply or shaking the steering wheel. That would make sense if a brake pad wasn't there and a rotor was grinding on a caliper. I have asked a few japanese mechs around here, and i guess it is pretty common with these. I have no clue how an entire pad could dissapear, but it happened. If I were you I would check your drivers side rear brakes and see if there is at least a brake pad there.
  7. Here being where exactly, and if the answer is the US, then how did you get it over there? What was the process? I very seriously want to take mine with me!
  8. I take it you mean a skyline. If I could get one to the states I would take one for myself. R33's are way sexier anyway...
  9. I just had my oil changed last week. I will have to go back to the mechanic because apparently japanese mechs want to make sure everything is good after they do something (novel concept). My appointment is tomorrow. I will ask him when I go. But from memory, when I looked up my filter at the store, there is no difference between td27 and td27t, and I believe that my filter is the one you mentioned, 4nc-109.
  10. I get about 675 km to the tank (80liter). so that's what, about 420 miles for 21.1 gal? But keep in mind that I have that glorious beatiful hum of a td27t coming out from under my hood. That is also pure Japan city driving at roughly 50kph (~30mph) I hate Japan's road sytem pssd When driving about 100kph on the toll roads I get FAR better mileage. I can go around 750 to 800km per tank at 80kph. /me kisses his td27t's feet
  11. Put about 2 fl oz of acetone in a full tank. That seems to work here in Japan. My mechanic told me that he does it in every car that he takes to get inspected and never has problems. I know that mythbusters had a bit on acetone in fuel, but I am not talking about a full tank of acetone, just 2-3 fl oz per 10 gallons or so. ( I have a diesel, so I use less. I want cetane not octane.) Also if you look at msds sheets for the fuel cleaner additives, you will see acetone in roughly these percentages in their ingredients. more acetone than that is bad bad bad. just a thought
  12. They are important because the sun sets pretty early over here. I am pretty far north (aomori prefecture). And there are VERY few street lights here. If you don't have clean headlights at dusk, you are going to lose your way quickly, or smack a tree. Most importantly, you DO NOT want to end up in a rice paddy. You will end up paying out your butthole and then some to the farmer of the field you "ruined". And over here, rice paddies are EVERYWHERE. You can be going on a good trail, and then wham! rice. And sometimes i just dont feel like getting out to clean them .
  13. I get some pretty mean looking stares. People are morbidly obsessed with keeping their cars clean. haha lol That is about as clean as my terrano ever gets! In parking lots, people cross to the other side of the lot while walking to avoid my truck. It is hilarious. There are a very small few Japanese people here that actually go off road, and those ones that do, show interest. Once they find out where I took my truck though, they get glassy-eyed and lose interest. Like "oh, screw that!" I guess cars are just too expensive over here to "abuse" them. I just got the terrano's JCI inspection done, and the inspector was pulling fist sized dirty chunks and pieces of grass and branches out of the undercarriage. He was not pleased. It was also hilarious, until he threatened to fail me. I can't wait to get back to the states where this kind of activity is more commonplace.
  14. My friends and I run a webhosting company in our spare time. it is XAC Hosting Pretty cheap, and good bandwidth.
  15. こんにちわ、 さかなーさん。 おげんきですか。 あなたのなまえわおかしいですね。 どうぞよろしく。
  16. Well, I am sure that the mister system would not be very hard to install... If anyone wants the system, there are sosooooooo many of these wd21's in junkyards over here. There are tons of places to get parts over here. The majority of them are diesels, but I would imagine that the misters and the clinometers aren't hard to take out and install in a pathy. Also, almost everyone of these here in the junkyards have front bumpers like mine, and most also have the foglights like mine. If anyone is interested, I could get the parts. Keep in mind that the shipping would be pretty expensive. The headlight misters have been on every diesel model i have seen. They are invaluable to me. I think the clinometers are just a box on the dash with power wires for the lights. (they are backlit when the headlights or running lights are on) I am going to take mine apart and see if it is feasible. Let me know of anyone is interested. here are some shots of the misters and the clinometer
  17. As I have said, I am in Japan. I have a 91 diesel. I was just wondering what all options your guys's pathys came with. Do any of you have headlight misters? or the clinometer on the dash? or the adjustable shocks? (mine has a switch to go between "sport" and "touring") Mine also came with high-beam/low-beam fog lights too. I find all of these very useful, but have never owned a pathy. Just curious.
  18. cdhicks99: it's konniciwa terrano: Thanks. I have a feeling that I will be pm'ing you alot hehe. I went out last night to a pretty good spot and got the truck nice and dirty for some pics. Here is one for now until I finish converting the rest to jpegs.
  19. getting the vehicle shipped isn't a problem. And it isn't the army, it's the Air Force. I guess I am just wondering why there aren't very many pathys with TD27T engines in them over there. They are great. I am hoping that they aren't restricted or something like that. I reaaaally want my TD27T over there in the states eventually.
  20. How long has it been since you drained the fuel-water seperator? I had some starting/running problems a while back, and my japanese mechanic told me to drain the seperator until some diesel came out, and then prime the filter back up with the pump. I never had a starting problem again after that. He also said to do it every other oil change.
  21. Thanks. It's good to find a site like this, and actually have some replies! I sooo badly want to take my grey wonder back to the states!
  22. What about bringing an engine and tranny to the states? I would be willing to part with the body, as long as i can keep the heart and soul...
  23. I am living in Japan right now, and will be moving back to the states in September of 2007. I desperately want to take my Diesel Terrano beauty back with me, but have no idea on what to do or who to ask. I know that the speedometer and various other clusters will have to be changed to MPH instead of KPH, but does anyone here know where I should start? I know I could buy one from an importer in the states, but I want to keep MINE. hehe. ( we have been through so much together...) Also, I only paid $1500US for it, and don't want to have to end up paying that and more for something I already had. Anyone had any experience with this?
