  1. Yes...but that is like me saying that I've made it to 66 and smoked cigars all my adult life, ate butter sandwiches, drank booze and made love to questionable women and here I am going strong.... So therefore, doing all that must be good for me. I might drop dead tomorrow morning while taking a dump. How ignominious....just imagine. BUT - if I stop all that bad stuff and repent and do only good things, I certainly will live another 30 years.... Right ! Well, the facts are that adding a cooler keeps the ATF cooler and extends the Transmission's life - so...'git 'er done ! - or do you want to buy another transmission and pay some dude $90/hour to install it ? BTW - I intend to keep smoking Cigars, drinking Beer and at least looking at and appreciating the finer aspects of the female of the species....even tho at 66 I can't do anything (as if I'd get the chance!). You put's yer money down and ya takes yer chances.....no guarantees. DoctorBill (the philosopher) PS - Do those 4 little little "stick" things they give you to "pin" the cooler to your radiator really work well? I would think the two of them vibrating would cause the Cooler to rub the radiator and eventually booger it up.
  2. I just today bought a "High Performance Transmission Oil Cooler - No 514" made by HAYDEN Automotive for $55.99 at Schucks. 0.75 Inch Thick, 7.5 Inch x 15.5 Inch (12 inch core) with screw-on fittings. http://www.haydenauto.com/Featured%20Produ...rs/Content.aspx I will install it when I replace the Timing Belt - that is, when I receive the TB Kit from Courtesy Nissan in 10 days via UPS Ground. I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew...... DoctorBill
  3. Slick just sent me a message that the ByPass Hose for the Pathfinder has a Schucks/Kragen part number 63735. That is for a Goodyear Item. Looked it up on O'Reilly web site - cost is $7.90 as of 6-9-2009. Thanks Slick, for the help. The folks on this Forum are nice people.... DoctorBill
  4. I just ordered the Nissan Bundle from Courtesy Nissan for $281.52 which has everything there for changing the timing Belt: Power Steering, Alternator, AT Compressor and Timing Belts, camshaft and front crankshaft oil seals, belt, stud and spring tensioner, water pump, gasket and thermostat. http://www.courtesyparts.com/bundle-timing...1-p-568787.html I want to buy that small "Bypass Hose" that everyone recommends to change while the front end is opened up. What is the part number ? If you do a SEARCH of Courtesy Nissan for "bypass hose", you get maybe a 100 parts without pictures of them ! Someone posted a photo of the bugger, but I cannot remember who. How the Hell can I tell which part to order ? Schucks does not show a small 90° hose like that either.... If anyone knows the exact name or where to order it or the NISSAN part number, please let me know. Thanks ! DoctorBill
  5. Having heard many different opinions and consulting with a member of another forum who's opinion I value (he repairs Geo metros and has repaired several Pathfinders), I have decided to leave well enough alone and just accept my Automatic Hubs as they are. Apparently I do not need to worry about the Automatic Hubs being corroded inside as the automatics are sealed well (no lever to turn and leak) and usually do not get stuck from rust. Also, the previous owner was not an off-roader, so the Hubs were probably never tasked with goop, mud, water or what have you. So...thank you all for your comments. I appreciate your input. DoctorBill
  6. I had a foot operation last Thursday, so I have to set here on my dead arse for seven days and I am going Bonkers! Decided that I would ask about the 4x4 front hubs that came on my WD21 '95 NP that are the automatic jobbies. I am used to being able to turn the lever from FREE to LOCK, etc. Can someone give me a good explanation of what these "Automatic" Hubs are doing? Are they worth squat ? What engages them ? Are they like a socket wrench - lock in one direction and run free in the other - or is it centrifugal ? Can I take them off EASILY and replace them with MANUAL HUBS if I get a set from the wrecking yard? What should I expect to pay for two hubs from a wrecking yard - just so I don't get a con job on the price ? Any comments on which type is better ? and why ? I took my wife's Geo Tracker's Hubs apart and found them corroded all to Hell and got them loose and greased and cut out new gaskets and had them doing well - then she totaled the vehicle...now she drives a Suzuki Sport Sidekick who's Hubs probably need lubing. But...would lubing them cause her to total the Sidekick...? lol (maybe...) DoctorBill
  7. Do you have an Automatic Transmission Cooler on your machine ? If we have to remove the Radiator, it would seem a good time to add that cooler... Most of the stuff removed would facilitate putting the cooler on. It would allow your AT to last longer. DoctorBill
  8. How difficult was it to remove everything in front of the radiator so you could install the cooler ? Everything on my '95 4x4 Pathfinder is so damned tight a fly couldn't walk around in there! I need to do the Timing Belt at which time the AT Cooler would be good to add... DoctorBill
  9. OK ! Thanks folks. I think I have the idea now. Not so big a deal after all. I believe I will go buy one of those Schucks (O'Reilly) ones for $40 and pop it onto the front of the radiator. Do they come with clamps and attachment brackets? Can you use just rubber hoses w/o metal pipes involved? Does anyone have a minimum size (area) recommendation ? Contrary to the Politically Correct statement - size does matter ! I have no plans to haul big honking trailers around. Have a 1,000 lb utility trailer, but use it maybe once every year to haul crap to the dump. I don't go off road. Winter snow is the only thing I might tax the Automatic Transmission with... DoctorBill
  10. Yes ! I should have realized that Dexron would be the cooling fluid - too many beers... What is so bad about the Cooler that came with the Vehicle ? Smaller area ? A radiator is a radiator is a radiator...no? Why would the stock radiator get plugged easily versus these after market things ? What keeps the AT from getting TOO COLD in nasty winters ? Do you turn a valve off in winter? Can you 'gang' two together for extra added cooling capacity - like desert driving ? Price variation on E-Bay is astounding ! Some even have their own fan...yikes! DoctorBill PS - I like your avatar ! "The Jerk Store Called"
  11. I am trying to find these coolers on Google and E-Bay right now - I am multitasking. Itching my butt, drinking a Beer, picking my nose (other hand) and typing on the keyboard ! Wow, maybe I can put this cooler on myself! I'd be smoking a cigar, but "she who must be obeyed" won't let me smoke in the house.... Bear with my questions - I am of the unwashed driveway mechanic type. What pumps the coolant thru the secondary radiator and the AT ? Is the coolant the same coolant as cools the engine ? If you disconnect from the car's radiator (where the water pump drives the coolant), how does the AT get the coolant moving? What happens in winter when it is zero Fahrenheit outside? Is there a thermostat in this AT Cooler ? I am soooo confused ! DoctorBill PS - Schucks (O'Reilly) has one for $56 - they sell 36 different coolers just for the '95 Pathfinder. http://shop.oreillyauto.com/productdetail....895&PTSet=A Still don't understand what drives the coolant...or what the coolant is made of.
  12. Been reading about the WD21's AT's overheating and blowing out. Happened to the previous owner of my '95 XE-V6 4x4 at around 95,000 miles. OK. So one should modify the Transmission's cooling by adding a second cooler. Do you mean a second small radiator up front ? Where does one obtain this magical device ? Do you have to have it done in a shop or can one easily and simply do it oneself. Remember - I am a simple person who can eat and watch TV at the same time, but much more is beyond my capacity. Is this expensive ? I am a retired, old man without "disposable income". Just living these days costs a fortune ! Besides....I must save money so's I can buy cigars and Beer! The Supreme Leader, El Supremo just signed Legislation that will undoubtedly increase the cost of my cigars... Probably Beer will be next - after all, it is for our own good ! Prohibition may rear its ugly head again. DoctorBill
  13. As I understand these things, the biggest stress for all the "parts" (after rpms too high) is when the engine changes rpms really fast or when the load switches from driving to being driven (reversal of forces). Is I right or is I right ? DoctorBill
  14. Next Thing - Timing Belt Kits. I saw one on E-Bay for $173 postage paid. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Timing-Belt...p4506.m20.l1116 Timing Belt Kit Pro 9704B Gunston Cove Road Lorton Virginia 22079 Phone: 703-339-7790 FAX: 703-339-6166 Has either a BANDO or CONITECH Timing Belt - never heard of either one ! The Water pump is GMB...(?). Probably all made by our friends in China and relabeled. Then Courtesy Parts has a kit (bundle) for $263 plus postage - all Nissan Parts: http://www.courtesyparts.com/bundle-timing...cPath=5572& Looks like it has the "Whole Ball of Wax" as they used to say in Los Angeles. I just hope Nissan isn't farming out its manufacturing to China, also. RockAuto has one as do other places.... Question is - Should I stick to Nissan Parts or go "Generic" and take my chances...? DoctorBill
  15. Yes - German (Belgian) Polish American Indian - Heinz 57... I have a tendency to Goose Step wherever I go ! I have watchmaking in my DNA. I like shooting guns, also ! ...and thoughts of scalping some people has crossed my mind. Maybe this is for another thread, but what is so bad about a direct connection via METAL, other than what Simon says about forcing us to keep repairs up ? The old Chain method seems more satisfying to my anal way of thinking.... What is it, the slight amount of "give" a belt offers ? It is almost 11 PM and is this old man's beddie-bye time... DoctorBill
  16. Have a look at this one - "the flight of the Phoenix" http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/...ad.php?t=645309 I have a whole long list, but I was worried that crossing over Forum lines, I'd cause trouble. The Geo is a "Toy" car to some - but, it is easy to fix and the 3 cylinder engine weights 50 lbs, more or less. But 50 miles per gallon regular is damned nice ! I am counting on this '95 Pathfinder, though, to get me thru our 2- 3 feet of snow here in Eastern Washington's winters. This last winter was a really bugger-all snowfall - hence the Pathfinder. I hope it walks thru snow like my old Jeep Cherokee did - my son took that one to the Coast. Bought 4 wheels and some studded snow tires - I'm ready...bring it on ! DoctorBill
  17. I was thinking of using the GatorBack, but Japanese automotive stuff is pretty damned good, so I will probably go with the Nissan Belt. If you look at this site and the Nissan pathfinder Automotiveforums.com site, you'll see quite a lot of Threads where the Timing Belt broke and "that's all she wrote..." It really pisses me off (who cares!) that automotive designers make an expensive metal machine who's entire existence depends on a rubber belt. That just seems so asinine. Why not a direct gear coupling ? DoctorBill
  18. I know this may unleash a butt load of argument, but being that I am an old curmudgeon anyway... Are there any hard and fast preferences for the Timing Belt Manufacturer ? Is the Nissan Belt a better one versus...say the Gatorback Belt ? BTW - Thanks for the link to the TB Changing site - I saved the whole page and each photo. DoctorBill If you are interested, have a look at my stuff: Example...Trans rebuild part 1. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/...ad.php?t=941461
  19. I just bought a 1995 Automatic Transmission Nissan Pathfinder 4x4 XE-V6 for $1,000 ! A steal - I think (?) ! I have several questions. 1. It has 167,000 miles on it and looks VERY good - no rust, no body damage, interior is great. Got it from a older guy who developed Gillain Barre syndrome and can't drive any more....bad luck. Anyway - this fellow has kept no records and said he had the injectors changed out at 95,000 miles - recalled. He had the Automatic Transmission rebuilt then also - burned out...(?) But - he doesn't know when the Timing Belt was changed - "Thinks" it was around 105,000 miles....(?) I am just foolish enough to think I can change the TB myself ! I am 66. Is/are there any link(s) with the method (maybe with photos) of how to change the Timing Belt ? I am a moderator on Automotiveforums.com - Geo Metro. I work on my Metro and take photos of the job - redid the engine, gas tank, fuel pump, from wheel bearings, manual Transmission rebuild, & more. I THINK I can do the Pathfinder TB, but am apprehensive. Intend to use the Gatorback Timing Belt. How about all that other stuff in the "kits" - necessary ? I would like some link that shows one how to do it - if anyone knows of one or more, please let me know. 2. What does WD21 mean when referring to the 1985 - 1995 Nissan Pathfinder ? 3. Does the 3 liter Pathfinder tow well ? I bought a wrecking yard Draw-Tite Hitch, installed it and I am hooking up the Converter Box for the lights. 4. Is 20 mpg normal for this vehicle ? I put in Bosch Platinum 2's when I got it. Changing the plugs is a bitch. 5. Looks like changing the Oil Filter will be a mess - on the side just above some stuff so oil must get all over everything... 6. Which engine would this Pathfinder have, the VG30E or the VG30i ? I have the Chilton Manual for what it is worth.... 7. I have the right side "tick" as per usual for this vehicle - probably a broken exhaust manifold stud - haven't looked at it yet. DoctorBill
