I started this topic a year ago and have since given up on finding the cause of the tapping noise. Since the pathy is running fine I decided to just forget about it since it is'nt going to get fixed right now anyway. I also think that the tensioner theory was shown not to be an issue on this engine. I'm pretty sure I have both the leaky manifolds and valve tap (yay) It seems to be pretty common for 138,000 miles. I wish you luck and and would be interested to know if you figure it out.

I have mine mounted in the cargo area, Passengers side just underneath the window on the bevele edge of the plastic. Its out of the way and doesn't get buried with crap when the cargo area is full,

There is evidence that the front passengers side fender is a little different from the others. The front bumper looks newer as to some other random parts. The glass is drivers side rear door. The first peice of glass that broke was the same vintage as the rest of the glass, I could tell by how the tint had faded to the same purple color on all the windows. So if it was do to a wreck it probobly would have happened before, right? Anybody got a source for cheap glass. I can't remember where I ordered the last one.

It's the first time I've used the shop, but they have a good reputation and have been around for almost 40 years. I'll definitely look out for how much float there is in the next window. maybe the door is warped or something. The window is fully cracked (safety glass) but the window tint is holding it all together. I'm pretty sure after seeing it that it was some buttmunch having "fun". It's just bizarre to me that it was the same window and both times nothing stolen or opened up. I guess I'll count my blessings that the radio and cd's were still there. -alcohol-

I just got a call from the shop that is doing my alignment. The alignment is done but did I know that I had a broken window (triangle) on the drivers side rear door. NOPE was fine when I dropped it off. Well its now broken, all the doors are locked and the alarm never went off. Nothing is apparently missing,(I have yet to see for myself). Here's the weird part, about six months ago the same thing happened in front of my house. Window broken, doors locked and no alarm. Is it coincidental vandalism or is there something that's causing this to happen? I don't know but I'm not looking forward to replacing that window again. :confused:

Yeah I took the whole axle out just to replace the boot, I used one of those split boots on the other side a few months ago. It was quick and easy, but I have read alot of negative things about them on this board. This time I had the car on jacks already and had just done the L&P CL install so I decided to go for it. After doing it once I am now confidant I could do it again in a timely manner. It took me three nights to figure out how to get the ball joint out of the upper control arm. (wasn't sure if i needed to loosen some other part) I had snapped all the heads off the bolts and the dang thing still seemed like it was glued to the Control arm. After I decided to replace the upper ball joint,I hit it with a BFH and it popped out no problem. Thanks to Simon and Pezzy I got the axle apart and put the new boot on, regeased all the parts and had it reinstalled in a short amount of time. Now I know why a lot of garages don't want to replace just the boot. I'm not sure how much a new or rebuilt CV axle goes for but if I had to do it again I would consider just replacing the whole thing.

I've finally got the CV axle off and on my work bench. I'm trying to replace the outer boot. The manual (haynes) that I have tells me that I have to tap off the wheel side end of the axle to be able to slide the new boot on. Is this correct? Is there another way? I have it in the vice and have hit it a few times but its not moving. I don't want to screw anything up so I thought I'd check. I took a picture, from what I read this is how I'm understanding this. thanks ps I've searched around and couldn't find anything specific to this part of the job.

I'm really embarrased to have to post this. Ok as you can see from the topic header I AM A MORON. I swear I measured both the CL like five times, carefully checking that the tape was in the same spot on both. I was measuring the new one while installed on truck and the goofy angle coupled with the PB blaster fumes made me forget that the tape measure I was using has the numbers on both sides of the tape because it has this handy window in it that lets you read it from the top(I don't know why it was a gift and its from freakin france). DUH! the numbers on the bottom are about two inches less. I"M SORRY. I can't believe what a dope I am. The CL are exactly the same, as to why I couldn't get he TRE's lined up I have no idea, But I know I tried and could not get either side to line up.(again I will blame the PB blaster fumes) I took another whack at it tonight and all is good, I have it all bolted up and no problem. Sorry and much thanks to PHIL and L&P your product is flawless. This is most definately user error. about $14,500. Its pretty much fully loaded, and only has 15,000 miles on it. Not really sure how a 2003 has only 15,000 miles. The dealer bought it at auction so we were thinking that it was a repo or seized. Anyway wifey loves it so I'm happy.

Thanks for the response Phil, I e-mailed you back. I hope no one got the impression that I thought you all wouldn't stand behind your product. I've heard nothing but good things about you all and appreciate the quick response. Ill try to put it all together tonight, as the tapers seem to be correct and the CL looks identcal aside from the length. From what I understand It can't be a fronty Cl because the tapers would be noticably different. Perhaps this is all mountain out of mole hill, but I just want to be sure, T

thanks brother-right now I'm cool because we have an extra car. Hopefully I'll get this figured out before the future owner (of the tercel)wants to take her away. I appreciate the offer though and will definately take you up on that if the situation calls for it. :cool2:

Nice, I like the red. I know its an optical illusion but the L&p in that pic looks a little shorter. Did you have to mess with the TREs when you put it all back together? I'll be bummed if its the wrong one, Its taken me forever to get the time to do it. Maybe the one I took out of the rig was wrong? The Old one is 31 accross from the TRE mounts, the new one is 29.

Damn! I got home and measured the two CLs and the stock one is 2 inches longer than the one I got from L&P. This seems like a pretty big difference. Unfortunately I beat the crap out of the old one to get it out so its not going back in, this means paths OOC until I get this resolved. Anybody have an opinion as to the size difference. I'm going to hold off on messing with the TREs until I have more information. :confused:

Guess i forgot to mention it was the Mazda Protege5. Super fun to drive, especially with the manual shift option on the auto tranny. Its a little under powered (130hp)but the handling is super crisp and sporty. That coupled with the leather seats and new car smell is honestly making me kinda jealous. The pathy is feeling kinda old after sitting in the shiny like new interior of her car. Its funny because a Mazda was never even in the world of cars we were looking at (Nissan, Toyota, Honda), but it had great consumer reviews and its was seriously the nicest(newer) car we looked at in our price range. Its my understanding that is was the last to be an all japanese model as well, hopefully this will mean lots of carefree driving. The only thing I'm worried about is the low profile all season Dunlop 5000M tires. They don't look like they would be all that usefull in the snow. Oddly enough when I went to the tirerack web site to check out tires they have a protege5 wheelin in the snow as their header. The tires got Ok ratings for minor snow fall. This puts me into a major delima. For obvious reasons(pathy) I love snow, so do I pray for lots of it as usuall and feel guilty or hope for a mild winter and be bummed like last year. I'm going with guilt-I grew up going to catholic church-I can handle it.

not yet, i just got it all bolted in last night. I havent tried to adjust the TREs yet, but it seems like difference is within the range of adjustment.

Picked this up on Saturday to replace my wifes 97 Tercel. Its a 2003 but it only has 15000 miles on it. Not a nissan but I got it at the nissan dealer. BTW what is up with the nissan versa. It looks like someone sh*t an Altima. PS stole the pic from the dealer-Its been cloudy since we got it.

So over the weekend we bought a new car for my wife, 2003 protege 5. I'll post pics later. This means that we now have an extra car for a few weeks. YAY i finally get to install the l&P centerlink Ive had since April. Good timing because yesterday was by far the coldest day we've had yet (40s F) Anyway aside from taking forever to drill out the pitman arm, everything went pretty smoothly. I got to the point of re attaching the the TREs and they need to be shortened, about a half inch on each side. I realize that they may need to be adjusted but shouldn't the old CL and the new CL be about the same length? It was a good stopping point anyway, and I plan to finish it tonight. I just wanted to make sure that this sounded right to you all. thanks t t

there are only a couple that might be a problem, but thanks for the heads up I'll keep an eye on the main offenders. Yes it is the broken stud issue and I really never though I'd have the money to fix it.

A couple weeks ago we had a pretty bad storm here in cental Ohio. I was fortunately out of town and didn't have to witness the carnage first hand. In fact until my neighbor told me to check the house and car I hadn't noticed anything at all. Well as soon as I got home I checked out the pathy and was shocked that I hadn't noticed all the little dents on the hood and roof for the two days I'd been home. Here the good part, when we bought our house the insurance company offered a house/auto policy with comprehensive on the cars for less then we had been paying for liability only. I brought the pathy to the the adjuster on Saturday to see if the damage would be woth paying the deductible and HOLY CRAP- I'll be reciving a $1700 check in 3-5 business days! They adjuster made a point of telling me a few times that I did not have to spend the money on fixing the hail damage. OK... So now I'm trying to decide what to spend it on. I'm thinking new tires and shocks or maybe getting the exhaust fixed. Its like an early christmas. My wife is getting 1200 for her tercel which the dealer just offered us 1500 as a trade in. Definately gonna put that towards a new ride for her. Anyway, I've never been through a hail storm like this before-and really hope never to again.
