  1. Hehe, I have one too. Every day I'm not sure if I should have gotten a manual or an automatic. I'm a VW and BMW guy, and if it were a BMW M3 I would only get a manual, but in a heavy and slow truck like a Pathfinder I just don't know.

But I love my manual because even though the VG33E is an iron lump it's still a lot more fun to drive than an auto. The shifter is too tall and a little sloppy. Also notchy too.

My original clutch went out at just over 100k miles. $350 for all new OEM parts and I was set. Replaceement is a little difficult because the transfer case had to be removed. I just paid a shop to do it.

But in the end, I love it when people get in my Pathfinder and can't believe it's a manual. Nobody knows they made these things in stick. Girls love it! B)

  2. i agree im quite capable ill never pay someone to do what i can do myself. this weekend im gonna convert my 99 auto maxima to a 5 speed. hows that for a weekend project....a few buddies a few beers and by sunday afternoon a 5 speed.....

I salute you on the Maxima conversion...

but how about the Pathfinder? 3.5 + 5-speed was a lot of fun to drive.

  3. I had a bad MAF too...probably when I was cleaning my TB. Anyways, when my MAF went it caused the truck to run pig rich, which mixed fuel with the oil, so it burned a little oil, which turned into a lot of oil, which turned into oil starvation, so now my truck burns oil when it's cold.

Also, it still runs a little rich, but I think that's because the O2 sensor may have become fouled. You can see black smoke in the rearview mirror over 4k rpms.

  4. So was this optional equipment on my Pathfinder or was it standard? This is a very timely thread...it's been on my to do list for a while.

When I did this on my 1998 4Runner with 83k miles, the filter had never been changed and it was disgusting. I simply cleaned out the filter with lots of Qtips and warm water and it worked great. No need to buy a new filter.

  5. So I swing by my old shop today(Nissan Dealer) and the shop foreman has an engine sitting on the floor, I ask him what thats all about and he says the guy never changed the oil and the sludge clogged the sump so it has an ever so slight rod knock. I ask for it and he says take it. I got a complete engine from throttle body to exhaust manifold. So next week I wil be tearing it down and ordering the parts required for a VG34 build.

Okay, I'm interested. My Pathfinder needs the engine rebuilt soon.

What are the parts needed to rebuild it to make a VG34? What do I need to do?

    Good luck with the teardown!

  6. Okay: 1999.5 SE 4wd 5-Speed with 105k miles

Burns a quart of oil every tank!!! and now has a slight rod knock, just waiting for the engine to go anytime now.

Sagging rear springs (The previous owner had a horse trailer!!!) and bad shocks all around

Just replaced the belts, they now squeal on startup (just need to tighten)

Needs tires soon (plus a matching spare tire on the back)

Needs front skidplate or at least new splashguard

Bose headunit makes annoying clicking sound on scratched CDs

    Fuel door bent

    Wipers all around

Sunroof motor needs to be looked at

AC compressor makes noise and will fail soon

Need to find cabin air filter and change it

Need floormats (I don't have any)

    Need new fog bulbs

    Need new shift knob

When heat is on there is a clicking sound, don't know what it is

Seats are stained to hell and I am too lazy to Woolite them

Annoying rattling in the driver's rear door that I think is a latch that has come loose, similar to a problem QuismO posted

Various dings/scrapes/scuffs from being in college and parking in huge lots

Driver's seat makes a really annoying creaking sound when I shift my weight

Roof rack rattles (I want an 02 rack like DJ)

Brakes are shot front and rear

Windows go up and down glacially slow in the winter (I know the fix)

Seatbelts don't retract well if you don't feed them up

I'm sure there is more, but that's all I can think of

  7.

just so you guys n gals have an idea...it sounds like a plastic BB bouncing around rapidly at the bottom of an aluminum can. and it occurs when going over rough pavement...can be easily heard if i purposely drive over the reflectors on the lane dividers =P

I have the exact same problem in my driver's rear door. It is the exact same noise but I just haven't been able to get the door panel off. My guess what that it was a broken clip or something but I haven't been able to check it out.

Today I noticed a new rattle from the roof rack area and another one near the hatch, like the one in the door. This drives me crazy!

  8. To answer your question, the real answer is no, you can't convert it. You can, but it is definitely not worth the trouble.

You would be best off to just wait until you are ready to buy another vehicle and get a 4wd. I made the same mistake when I got my first car, a new 2003 Xterra. It was two-wheel drive and the same, underpowered VG33E engine like in my Pathfinder. Point is, don't mod your QX4. Just wait until you are ready for another car and suck it up for now. I ended up taking a substantial loss trading in my Xterra and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

    Good luck.

  9. The Bose system sucks in our cars, like all Nissans.

Replace the unit with an aftermarket head unit. If you want good sound quality you are going to have to replace all of the factory speakers. The fronts have their own individual amplifier, and the rears have a amp (I guess a crappy 2-channel).

    Good luck with it all!

  10. Dude, Rancho> Monroe.

Actually, aren't they owned by the same company?

Bilstein is quality stuff too. KYB isn't bad, notoriously stiff. Koni is another cool company that doesn't make truck stuff.

  11. Hmmm.... Methinks it will be a borderline miracle if there isn't some kind of damage from running with that low of oil...

Did they do a compression check and a leakdown test?

If not, I highly advise doing so before spending any $$$ on the MAF.

They did a compression test and it was okay, no leakdown test, which in hindsight should have been performed.

I have a 600 mile drive tomorrow, so I will monitor the oil consumption. Mobil 1 synthetic and filter went in today... B)

  12. Glad it was not the motor, but there is still the mystery of the low oil... watch it closely for a while... $550 for MAF ??? WTF ??? I'd be junkyarding it !!

congrats on it being less of an issue than you thought !!

    B

    Thanks B!

What I"m hoping the low oil was was that since fuel was mixed with the oil by running pig rich that the oil was combustible. I will be keeping a close eye one the oil level though. And it did compression check just fine.

I also will be Auto RXing it, just curious if anyone has tried it.

  13. How I heard that one before if it fits a navara then I'd say wait it out I went through a very long string with ARB and they had no clue at the end. The bar they sent. Navara bull bar. Did it fit anything here? NOPE. The Navara bar is set up naot for anything in North America.

What do you mean? It shows a picture of the Pathfinder with the ARB on...there should be no difference between foreign and US spec Pathfinders.

  14. UPDATE:

I took the Pathfinder into a reputable shop today, worried that I would need a new engine. I told them to see what the problem was, hoping I didn't collapse a piston ring. After two arduous hours, here is their findings: :D

"Customer states vehicle smokes when accelerating -check and advise. Perform compression test if necessary.

We found engine oil is fuel contaminated, fuel pressure normal. We found Mass Air Flow sensor 118 gr/sec on snap acceleration (Known good meter from Infiniti QX4 on lot 52.89 reading). Engine going rich on acceleration causing overfuel, contaminating oil, causing burn. Plugs are OK (covered in soot but should clean with normal use). PCV valve getting clogged, compression OK at this time. Recommend Mass Air Flow sensor, PCV valve, change oil & flilter & monitor oil consumption.

Mass Air Flow sensor ($550 parts & labor)

PCV valve ($45 parts and labor)

    Oil Change ($25.27)

I'm just getting a dino oil change because I'm gonna Auto RX it to help with the sludging. Expensive sensor, dealer cost is $390!

  15. I saw in Pezzy's picture post that someone put Toyota Tundra steelies on his R50. Those should be pretty cheap. I know you can put Xterra wheels on too, and you could pick up a set of steelies or alloys.

    Edit: maximusnt has Tundra steelies.

  16. Honestly, I don't know why you're not looking into suing Firestone. You seem content to just lie there and take it up the butt while they caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to your truck by not doing the maintenance properly...

Because I can't prove that it was Firestone. I don't even know that it was Firestone, but they were the last ones who changed the oil. I have my oil change reciept and the oil change was from before Thanksgiving break. I didn't notice anything weird, didn't notice any oil burning, didn't hear anything wrong until I found I was three quarts low. I just don't see how much blame I can put on Firestone. I mean, maybe they underfilled it by a few quarts and then I drove on it and it burned up a quart without me noticeing and sludged up the engine? I'll talk it over with Dad but we just have no proof that they screwed it up.

Well, so I went to the dealership who I trust and who is really honest today. I talked to the service advisor about my situation. Thanks K9sar for posting the compression #s but we decided not to even do a compression test, as there is no point in checking the compression of an engine that 1)will be junked and be replaced by a used engine or 2) be rebuilt and possibly not be as good as a used engine but will be equally expensive. We took off the oil filler cap and shined a flashlight into the valvetrain, the sludge was one of the worst he has ever seen. On a scale of 1-10 of sludge, mine was an 8 or 9 but doesn't knock. I don't think I'll be driving up to Indiana because it's such a crap shoot.

I want to get a used engine out of an Xterra off of Ebay one of the ones I posted a link to. That seems the best option.

What do you think is the going price of taking out my engine, stripping the accessories, and putting the accessories onto the new engine? Maybe another $1000? Is that all that is involved? Apparently making an Automatic tranny Xterra motor into a Manual Pathfinder motor is a real PITA.

    Thanks!
