  1. To keep it short, sweet and, simple:

At my place we have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. (Dad said Absolutely No lift

    kits or mods to it)http://npora.ipbhost.com//style_emoticons/default/thumbsdown_anim.gif

I am a high school student and I am in my automotive program at my High school.

We have a brake lathe at my school an I am aloud to do any labor for my family or myself free, considering I do the labor myself.

A little over a week and 1/2 ago, I noticed my brakes were squeaking and "out of round" or "miss-aligned" or "non parallel." (no they were not squealing from the pads being worn out, already checked that)

I told him that all that needs to be done is have .002" (the width of a human hair on your head) machined off each side of the rotor to make them parallel again, and sand a little of the pads off to remove the glazing on the pads. (Keep in mind this is FREE LABOR to do this and my instructor is an ASE Certified Master Technician). I am thinking cost effective and beneficial.

He said that considering its only $10 bucks a rotor at napa brand new and $14 for new pads(per axle), we should just get new parts rather than have the rotors be worn down a little and need it again in 3-4 months. He is thinking about what would be the most beneficial thing to do, which is buy new parts that will last longer in the long run.

    Get them machined= $0

    Buy Brand New parts =$34

Help from a forum poll= Priceless help and opinions

I keep telling him its free, he would rather spend money.... Doesn't make sense!

What do you think should be the proper thing to do?

  2. vg33, blocks are the same, I beilve VG33 came stock in the following;

You can find all the answers in the link on my prevous reply. just click on the underlined "3.3 swap" and read the pages that follow.

    Appreciate it man!

The one thing I have a problem with is, Will the motor mounts in an 88 line up with a motor from a 96? Or will I have to do some modifying?

  3. I am thinking about it, But I am thinking about doing a motor build from the base block. As in new pistons, arms, crankshaft, the whole 9 yards.

The one thing I wanna know...

Should I do a VG30 motor or a VG33 motor. And are the blocks different?

Basically I wanna know which motor would be worth it, a VG30 or a VG33? What years of pathfinders they are in?

And is their anything that I should avoid, try, or should I just not even try it?

  4. A nice WRX scoop would be a huge addition to a Pathy hood...

    112_0611_20z%202006_subaru_wrx%20hood_scoop.jpg

And I would LOVE to do a WRX hood.... Except

    You can't find the hoods...

Someone find me a pathfinder hood and a wrx hood and I will mold em together!

I have worked with fiberglass, bondo, steel and any other bonding agents...

  5. As most of you know my pathfinder is not running well, and with my parents taking it out of my hands and putting it on my grandparents farm for a while, I was thinking about in my time left before summer, doing a motor build.

Thinking about doing a VG30i (the same motor in my pathfinder now)

I can get the whole motor for about $150-$175 from a friend at a local junk yard.

I also have a friend who has a trucking company who does engine fabrication and engine repairs who said he would do anything I needed for almost free considering I got him a date and a little "somethin somethin" hehe

He told me he would machine the cylinders for $30, check the specs on the heads for $20 a head and any other things I may need.

Thinking about it, just wanting some opinions on the idea...

    Share your thoughts....thanks!

And if you think I should do something different let me know...

  6. when I do a compression test, I watch the needle and let it pulse at least three times before taking the reading (even longer if it seems to still be making significant increase) to make sure you are catching the compression stroke as opposed to exhaust.

Even a little oil will smoke like a sonofabitch. Make your plugs pretty (brush the carbon off etc) and run it for a bit. If there is a specific cylinder that is burning oil, the plugs will tell you which one. Once you isolate the cylinder and if the compression test is good, I woudl then focus on valve seals.

I will try it out man...thanks!

Won't be able to do it tonight cause I got dinner with the girlfriend and her parents so I will try it tomorrow morning and let you know what I find!

  7. Y61 Patrol scoop? Not a cheap option, but would look good.

    070331_200224.jpg

    tempting.... I like it....

    anyone got any other ideas?

I was thinking about a 2" cowl induction hood maybe?

    or some other cool style?

any other styles anyone wanna see?

  8. I say get a a 90 or 91 motor, rebuild it and strap a turbo to it... I got a friend who strapped a turbo to his motor in his little 91 hardbody pick up and he made custom oil lub lines, custom exhaust manifold, boost controller, and a greddy bov.... Ran it at 8psi and it was dyno'ed at about I believe 325-350hp... Stock V-6 motor... Bout 100,000 miles on it...

Reason why I say rebuild it is cause in my friends motor, 3 months later it blew a rod... Right through the side of the block... And right into his turbo too...or some part of the turbo... Maybe the oil lines...idk don't totally remember...

All I remember is it was brutally quick, then had a nasty ending....

  9. I seem to think he is looking bolt on, which are goeing to make options limited. That or them stick on scoop things.....getting nautious just thinking of them.

Exactly... bolt on is the only thing i can do for now, primarily because i don't have any of the metal shaping tools to do it with...

Plus i really like the hood scoop on the terrano... looks really sick...

And no way in the world am i gonna go purchase some plastic crap from advance, auto zone, walmart or where ever you get it at and literally stick it on my hood.... no freaken way! plus i want a 2 function piece style and intake purposes... (yes i will make it filtered, water resistant and all that stuff too...

(can anyone find me a good photo of the hood with the scoop?)

  10. what color smoke? just to make sure its actually oil you're burning...and if it is oil can't a bad PCV cause this too?

Lot of blue and a tiny bit of white cause I had a little coolant spill into the intake when I was hooking it back up... This was before my throttle body...

  11. she lives again! I went out to do a new compression test and decided to try and see if she would start, turned the key and she started!

I blew a piston ring though cause she smokes more than a forest fire!

    Help please!

(apparently she doesn't like to run when hot...)
