Crushed Rocker Panel

Got bitten by a rock out wheelin' a while ago and pretty much crushed the passenger side rocker panel! Took my Pathy to the local body shop and they wanted CDN$ 785 to pull it broadly back into shape, cut out the main damage and weld in a new section. Right now I got better things to spend my cash on (like rock sliders!!!).

Is it possible to drill out the spot welds on the old damaged panel and bolt on a new one or is this a job best left to the experts? If it can be done at home, has anyone done it, and what is their advice?

Thanks

Arctic Mark

How badly is it molested? My friend did rocker damage in his truck last year and he went to a metal shop where he had them cut and bend (to a similar profile) a piece of diamond plate. He then made sure that the actual rocker won't rust by painting it, he painted the diamond plate black, and attached it using sheetmetal screws and black automotive goop to the actual rocker. The end result was very very nice. I am thinking of doing something similar to my quarterpanels (because they're quite dented).

My rocker panel is bent up pretty well, had to attack it with a rubber hammer just so the door could open and close properly. Doesn't appear to be much damage to the inner panel though, just the outer. Like the idea of covering up the ugly dent it with diamond plate, adding rock sliders and forgetting about it!!

Are we talking this bad?

I priced OEM replacement metal for the rockers before that happened, was like $90 for just the section under the front door. My plan is to cut them off completely and put some box steel down there.

A few have used diamond plate bed rails, I think the ones for a Chevy S-10.
