Theres lots of stuff out there...esp on 4x4...but has any1 here done this...

 

the plans are:

 

95 motor

wiring harness

dash

ecu (its an auto im a manual i've gotta do some checking on that)

steering column

 

some of the things i've thought of are:

 

im not planning on swapping over the abs sensor and that good jazz will this affect the truck in any way?

 

how crazy am i for attempting this?

 

and im sure a lot more technical questions will come im going to try to strip the interior this weekend and get the cab harness in place

 

my plan of attack is to leave the 87 harness in for now until i have the truck running in case i for some reason hit a brick wall i can just swap intakes/exhaust and go from there

you can't just swap out the engines. The problem is, if you put in an EFI engine and attach it to the TBI, you will get fire.. big fire. The TBI is basically (for lack of better explanation) always open on the fuel injectors. If you are always open on the EFI fuel injectors you will have problems.

 

if you swap out everything (basically running a 95 setup in the 87) the computer, wire harness and other periferies will be wrong.

 

 

This is vague and i'm sure 88 will correct me, but unless you only use the engine and run all the 87 BS with it, you will have problems.

alright... i guess the only thing that i really dont have is the sensor off of the rear end and im not sure of the connectors on the tranny's but before i start i guess i'll go thru and check every connector in the book from each as well as the connectors on each harness

i started going thru the wiring diagrams and it looks like most of it i can work out im going to lay the harnesses on top of each other and verify the connectors and make sure i have everything i need...

 

the only differences i should run into are on the tranny and rear end and i need to get a manual ECU...also need to verify that the harness has both manual and auto connectors which is the impression i got from the book...

 

is there anyway i can find out what the ecu needs commands from to run right...

 

thanks for the input i will prob start on it monday and tues B4 i hit the obx and then on the weekends so i'll try to keep updates of what i've done and what i've concluded

i really like the pickup the EFI has compared to my TBI to me it seems like it has more power im not sure what its rated but i'd say it seems like it has 20-30 more hp with the efi...

 

but if i cant get all of this to work out that is y i was going to leave the old harness in...so i could swap intakes go and hook everything back up and get rolling

 

 

also im pretty surei'd have to switch fuel pumps...

so from looking at the harness and diagram it looks like i need the harness from the gages to the cruise button to the fuse block...the harness from the main harness to the tranny...clutch pedal and harness...with the ecu and then i think everything will work out

 

i also believe i need to unhook all of the automatic crap

 

 

i think it would work without the tranny stuff tho b/c its just reverse, neutral, tcase, and speedo...besides the reverse sensor is busted on my tranny hmm that reminds me i need to check the 87 diagram with the 95 im sure it hass all the same sensors i might have to do some plug swapping if they chagned them up...

 

so if i can find all those pieces i think im going to give this a go...the worst that can happen is it doesnt work and have to swap everything back over...its nothing but time...

A lot of wiring to get it to work although most of the wire from your pathy will work with it.

 

You'll need a manual ECU although you could possibly trick your auto ecu. I don't have the time to figure out how the manual and auto ecu's differ though to tell you how it could work....

 

 

 

The pinout on the ECUs should be similar so it's just a matter of you swapping some plugs from the 95 onto yours. Maybe you'll have to add some wiring if there any any additional sensors.

 

In thought, it should be a relatively easy swap. I've already figured out how to get my swap working. Only thing left is to get plan out all the wiring I have left.

 

Just remember that little detail that slick found out when using an auto engine and trying to mate it with the flyweel of a manual.

sorta like a pilot bearing?..i'll take a look im pretty good with a drill in drilling out the pilot bearings so if it looks similar i'll drill it out autozone is like 15 mins away and i never drive by it or i'd stop in 1 day pick it up and then drop it off the next...

There is an adapter installed in the back end of the crank on auto-equipped engines. It needs to be pulled out to use the engine with a manual. Autozone has pullers for that you can prolly borrow.

 

ok maybe i messed this up with my 1st motor it being a maxima motor...but the insde of the crank looks the same on both of those and i know the pilot bushing went in just fine on the maxima motor...

 

does any 1 have a pic of this adaptor b/c the only thing i see in the back of the crank is something that resembles a freeze plug...

well after this past weekend what i accomplished:

 

Removed old motor

Installed new hooked up vaccum lines and coolant lines

 

plans for weds & thrus:

 

remove both fenders and run 95 harness and hook up to engine

install pilot bushing and clutch

install tranny (time permitting)

swap gas and brake pedals

 

plans for the following weekend (i have to go be in a wedding this weekend):

if i get the remainder of my harnesses and clutch pedal install those

swap fuel filter

change steering columns

hook up new dash

 

hopefully give it a crank

well got the old dash out and test fit the 95 and it fits awsome dont have to change any brackets (at least for the top half) but i did stumble upon my 1st "problem"

 

the 95 speedo is electronic where the 87 is gear driven...so my plan is to find an extra set of gages for the 95 and remove the electronic speedo (4 screws) and drill a hole in the back and swap over the hardware from the 87 to the 95 but dont want to do it on the gages i have right now b.c i dont have any backups if i screw it up...

 

but the plans are to finish running the harness before the weekend and then on sat bolt on the flywheel and clutch then install the tranny,FA and driveshafts and ohh yea the fuel pump i keep forgetting that...so im hoping i dont hit any major humps and can give her a breath of life once again

I dunno if the dash gauge thing is going to work. They're almost completely different, aren't they? You might just try finding a sending unit(revolution sensor) from a parts store or junkyard(who knows?), then dropping that in instead of the mechanical one, if they can be interchanged. You'd need a new wire or two, but that's a short run fron the trans to the ECU.

yea i need to pop out the speedo sensor in my 95 and see if its a gear run transducer if thats the case and the gears have the same # of teeth then i should be able to do that...

 

 

yest. i got the flywheel clutch tranny cross members and all the grounds taken care of...i did accidently nick some wires when i was chopping the front end off so i could pull the motor and tranny together so i soldered those back together mostof them were'nt all the way thru so i hope that is a sufficient way to fix them

 

the plans for today are to get the front axle, driveshaft and cv's back installed with the t bars...then drain the fuel tank and change the fuel pump

 

 

gonna keep my fingers crossed and hope this all works out...i have a feeling the dash is going to light up like a christmas tree with the door ajar lights, tire carrier and whatever else i dont have hooked up...

DONE...she fired up didnt throw any SES lights...

 

i had to hook up the auto shifter i forgot it had a sensor for park...bump switched the starter...and she fired up like she always has...

 

only things that dont work right now is the temp guage....

The engine runs in open-loop mode until it warms up(relying on pre-set values to calculate fuel/air ratios), then switches to closed-loop mode relying on the MAF, TPS, air temp, coolant temp and O2 sensors to calculate fuel/air ratios, spark timing and injector timing. Perhaps a combination of things are making it run that way when it comes out of open-loop mode. You can run a real-time ECU test to see if the TPS is working OK and if the O2 sensor is giving the proper feedback when it's running. Check your FSM for the procedures.

 

 

hmm that is nice to know thanks for that info 88 this means i will prob throw a code once its up to running temp and no O2 is hooked up....

 

 

also i think i figured out y my temp guage wasnt working...i didnt fill the coolant system before the test crank due to the fact if it worked i was going to have to remove the radiator to run the final position of the new wiring harness so i think it was just reading ambient air temp in the block which probably looks like 0

 

this leads me to the question if the guage/sensor goes bad which way does the needle end up (pegged at hot or cold) i think my buddies jeep pegs to hot when if it goes bad as a fail safe for drive to know that the engine could be in jeopardy
