Just a note r-12 and r-134a ARE NOT Freon. They are a replacement to Freon, and, as far as we know, don't have the Ozone destroying properties of Freon.

As far as which one you should use it should say on the underside of your hood. Also I'm pretty sure this isn't something you can safely do in your backyard, but I may be wrong about that.

There refrigerants and both are ozone depleting gases, just not as much as freon. But believe me 134a will be obsolete in a short time also, they keep finding safer and safer refrigerants. The goverment takes this very seriously !

To answer question it should be labled what refriderant is in there and also the fittings are different for each refrigerant. Although having to add refriderant is not a good sign don't be surprised if it doesn't hold a charge, mine didn't. Also don't forget to put in refridgerant oil also because if you just add refriderant it's going to burn out the compressor.

it seems like it holds just fine.. because my a/c blows cool air it's just not cold.. after 15 years i would expect to have it recharged...the cool air isn't enough to make a difference so i end up having the windows rolled down when it's 105 outside..not too fun but bearable

one more thing does the refigerant ever just get old so it doesn't do as good of a job? so should it all be taken out and replaced with new stuff or will be making ure it's full be the same thing?
