CV boot

so i looked at my driver side cv boot the other day, its twisted, so i was just outside playin with it and i didnt hear the hubs or anything unlock or lock, no signs of it going into 4hi or lo, but the boot is torn and will be replaced but is this a sign of hub failure (i was in sand the other day, down the street from my house just playin, nothing real big or hard on the truck but i put it in 4 for a few minutes)

 

 

UPDATE: i took her down to the local sand pit area thingy ma jig, and i put it in 4hi and lo, it works but i still didnt hear the hubs lock, i aslo shifted into 4hi on the fly without problems (newbies: see shifting on the fly pinned in the 90 to 95 section), i aslo did some donuts and threw up alot of dust and sand, i added that cuzz it was fun, and no im not worried about it getting into the cv boot cuzz its a tiny little pin hole, if was doing a weekend of wheeling or mudding then i would worry

 

but still i want to know if anybody knows why the crap the boot is twisted like it is

How would a hub failing affect a CV boot? Hmm. :confused: In other words...no, I don't think that'd do it. Both ends of the boot should be immobile and turn at the same rate when spinning, so it should have no tendency to twist at all.

Yeah, unless the CV has spun loose of the splines, or busted completely the shaft wouldn't spin intependant of the end. Maybe just a loose clamp and centrifical force made it move a little .

maybe it wasnt engageing or disengageing when i was in 4, idk, thats why i freakin asked

 

 

ive never heard of a cv boot twisting like this, the axle shaft isnt broken, the tire spun as far as i could tell, i went muddin and the spray was equal to the other side (and i crawled in to the mud, i didnt come flyin into it) , but i tries to climb a clay hill and that tire never spun even when it got lifted

did you maybe hit a tree branch/stump that was on the ground (hidden) and it caught the boot and twisted it? i have seen that happen before.... just a thought

na, i put it into 4 the other day just to get out of some sand, then took it out, thats probably when it got like that, im going to be rippin it apart tomorrow, well see then

Reach under there and see if you can untwist it by hand, maybe.

i tried that actually, its twisted nice and tight, im going to my dads shop tomorrow, ill take it apart and what not
