So one day my truck would have the wheels like this /\ and one day they'd be like this ||

 

So tonight I decided to tear the CRAPPY NISSAN IFS apart to see what's going on under there.

 

This is a tension rod on a WD21 Nissan.

This is where the tension rod was. Something tells me that the hole USED TO BE ROUND AND SMALL!

That's right... the collar (like the new one I put on) has completely desintegrated over the last 14 years. Yay!

So I am picking up some more new components for the CRAPPY NISSAN IFS! Sweet Jebus that's some wear and tear and some of the components are less than two years old pssd

 

Have no fear... The white Lowrider will ride again!

Yeah, not a difficult fix, at least. Which reminds me, I've been meaning to get some new bushings for the compression rods......I should check into mine to see what shape they're in.

Looks like the cups that hold the compression rod bushings are pretty shot, too. If you have access to a welder, you can use some bearing races as a replacement and tack them in. I did and it works great. The part # for them is somewhere on this board. I tried searching for you, but came up empty, sorry. Maybe you'll have better luck with the search or someone will chime in with the part # for you.

Actually, the Nissan IFS is fairly well engineered for on-road and stock use. It's when you start lifting and messing with it that it starts to show weak points. Every vehicle has them in one way or another. Keep it clean and well-maintained and it will work fine. None of your problems are new or even surprising to me.

 

The AC arms all have that side-to-side spacing problem. You have to cut/grind the stock bushing sleeves down along with the bushings to get them to fit right. Otherwise, it's possible for them to slide back and forth on the bushings at will under load. The gap you're seeing at the end of the spindle is normal, the sleeve is still inside the bushing and it won't move under load. The spindle ends are tapered, is all.

 

Old Nissan compression rods/strut rods typically do that. I've seen it over and over and over on lots of forums. Bottom line: if you have slop in the suspension, clean it all off and start eyeballing things. The problems are rarely invisible.
