No Reverse!

I have a 95 nissan pathfinder that wont shift into reverse anymore. There is no sound when I engage the reverse gear but if I put it in four wheel drive low I can reverse for about thirty seconds before I lose power and it stops working. In 2WD or 4WD high I get nothing. Ive taken it to two transmission places, they told me to get the whole tranny replaced of course. Is there some piece of the linkage or shifter that could be causing this problem? Where on the transmission does the linkage hook up to? Is there anything else that can cause this problem?

Thanks

manual or auto? I had my reverse go out on me with my AT and it turned out I needed a tranny rebuild due to worn clutch discs and a failed pump. In an AT, the reverse gear operates at a higher pressure than the fwd gears so that is typically the first thing to go. If you have a manual... ignore my post :)
