Rust

Ok, i did a search on the forum for "rust" and i got a gazillion matches which ranged from "how old was your vehicle when it first got rust" to "rust on the engine/exhaust". I simply have two little rust spots, both of which are about 2 millimeters in width, on the roof of my pathy. I saw them when removing the crossbars that lay across the roof between the two roof rack beams. So i unloaded the snowboards, and wiped down the roof to get a better idea of what to do.

 

I'm thinking, can i just sand it down? maybe about the size of a dime to include the general area around the rust spots, then apply primer, and then some touch up paint...will that be enough? what do you guys n gals think about touch up paint as far as protection from rust is concerned? Or do you all have other methods that you think would be better? Looks/cosmetic appearance does not matter to me here as it's on the roof, so they're hard to see unless you're somehow standing over the vehicle, and both spots are extremely small.

you didn't give us the lengths of these spots.. that could make a difference but you did say small... so i am going to assume them to be scratches.. yeah, to what you said.. whatever you do (don't have to necessarily sand it) you need to get rid of/stop the rust... there are many products for that.. may want to look at the product review thread.. not sure where it's at but i am fairly sure it's pinned somewhere.. i think, folks mentioned anti-rust products.. it'd also think, that there is some discussion of rust prevention/treatment methods in threads titled "frame rot" and "frame rust." (or something to that effect)

yea there's 2 rust spots, 2 millimeters in width each. i want to get rid of these before i get a leak in my roof :o

"2mm" and "dime size" covers it I think. If its just surface rust, I'd suggest sanding it off anyways, then doing a rust inhibitor on top. There are the rust converting paints and treatments and stuff, but if its minor, why not just remove it altogether and solve the problem once and for all. Especially since its on the roof, and in an area concealed by your roof rack.

they have to be 2 dimensional and i still just get the width.. but no worries mate... thinking they are small and what you said would work... i like to use the naval jelly stuff.. it works pretty well but there are also rust inhibitors/blockers that are really, really good. they immobilize the rust.. not sure what they turn it into but they turn in into something tough.. the por13 is super but very expensive.. never used it myself but my buddy painted the auto locking hubs on his X and they still look like new/v. shiny after almost a year of super heavy abuse while wheeling..

Here, this has 3 threads that apply. Regardless of which you choose to use, just be sure to treat the rust, and not just paint over it...

you can call me that if that makes you feel any better but it doesn't read so straight forward as you say.. it really could be anything... the way i read it, dime size around the edges of the spot to include some clean area.. well, that could be half the roof..

Dime size. 2mm. = SMALL, er, small. Dude, roll with it. Dime sized would mean dime sized, I'd think. There has been far too much reading into the interpretation of dime sized vs. the solution to the dime sized rust.

Have you money? Have you no comprehension of the dime? -thnkboutit- Seriously man, you're over reading the situation here. Small amount of rust = no problem. Simple fix.

After careful examination, I'd have to say the rust spots are 10 pence piece sized...
