I'd go for the JY one too, although its still a risk, especially of your time. Done that, and got one that burned a quart every few hundred miles on a Mitsubishi Mighy Max and similar on a used JDM import engine in my old Prelude. Both times, it was handled through warranty, but both times it was still a PITA with no wheels. I had to pull the Mitsu myself and take it back, but the 'lude was through a shop. However you look at it, used is used and you never know what you're getting yourself into. Maybe look into pulling your heads and having them handled professionally, although that also isn't cheap. However you play it, good luck!

Just a thought. Seeing how the remanufactured VG30E costs $2900, if you decide to go this route, perhaps it may be in your best interest to look for a Whole Pathfinder. I bought my 91XE for $2800 Canadian and was ripped off, so you could easily find another Whole Rig for that much. That way incase things happen later you have another parts vehicle. Although I'm assuming you just bought that vehicle haha. Just my thoughts anyway.

I went out and looked at both the engine and the rig it came out of.

I also talked to several people about JY engines from this place all said nothing but good things.

With having 2 pathy's im not worried about time, just $$$ now, had the budget set for the new tires, calmini lift, Panther skids and a fabbed bumper.

I will go back and get a closer look at the JY engine....................

Is the Commodore engine the guys from OZ use the same or similar to the GM 3.8 here? An open question, that is.

I think the Commodore engine was based on a Buik 4.2 or something similar. I am not 100% sure on the engine size except to say that it was not another 3.8.
