Guest Kaz
Anyone have any experience changing out the solinoids in a 93 Pathfinder AT? I can't use my overdrive gear and its killing my fuel mileage on the hwys. It also dones't help that I'm in CA and a gallon of regular is now $2+!! -mad-
Diesel Boy
Hey. No one has posted a reply and i was hoping they would as well as you!!! I will keep you informed on what happens with mine. I have an over drive niggle. Yours sounds like a common problem, as every tranny repair specialist i have talked to has said that they have never heard of my particular problem, but the tranny actually no shifting into over drive is very common. All they do is reset the computer on the tranny and it works like new again. If you havn't had this done yet, do it before you try playing with the solenoid. Sounds like an easy fix for a common prob. I think there is a botton on the computer, but i guess you could try dissconnecting the battery and then connecting it again?? Guest Kaz
Well I went in and got a solinoid pack from the Dealer its $380 what a rip! Anyway I'm gonna try installing it this weekend. BTW Where is the Computer for the AT?
88pathoffroad
The A/T computer in mine is behind the wall panel on the passenger's side in the rear somewhere. I think. Heh. Try simply disconnecting your battery's positive lead for 5 minutes, then reconnecting it. I hope you're ready for a lot of work, the tranny pan won't come off that thing unless you drop the exhaust as well, because the pan won't clear the exhaust crossover pipe. Rusty bolts are not your friend in this regard. Just so you know.
Guest Kaz
Yeah You weren't kidding!!! 88path! Geez! the exhaust was a pain to get off!! I didn't realize how much work that was going to be! Unfortunately i messed up the valve body spacer when I changed out the solinoid pack.. so the Pathfinder is out of commission for one more week.. Thank god I have another car to drive around in for now. If anyone else is thinking of doing something similar I would recommend you take it to a dealer to deal with since it is so messy!! I got ATF all over me! And it never seems to stop dripping ATF even after a week! I definetly under estimated the time and complexity of fixing the AT.. While I'm in there is there anything else I should be changing out?
sw
the trans fluid filter & fluid
88pathoffroad
The "filter" in the auto's is simply a fine-mesh screen. No real "filter" to change.
Diesel Boy
Yes, but the mesh screen is in a case that is all shaped with a seal on one end and a pick on the other!! A whole lot more than just a piece of gauze/mesh. It becomes clogged with fine metal slurry after a while. Unbolt the filter unit and disgard it. Replace with the new filter unit. They are designed to be disposable filters. Pete.
ChromoTech
I reset my tranny computer and ive not had any problems since and changing my fluid and filter took like 4 1/2 hrs and i was also covered by tranny fluid!
Guest scoobadave71
Just outta curiousity how did you reset the tranny computer? By disconnecting the battery for a few mins? I have the ole AT sticking and not allowing to switch from 1st to 2nd gear and have to go into neutral and restart the Pathy .... otherwise the tranny performs great. ChromoTech
U have to open up the right rear inner panel. its the brass looking box on the left side of the clarion amp for the rear speakers. u just disconnect the wiring brackets for about 2-5 min and reasemble then u may want to reset the ECU box by disconnecting the battery for like 2 min and reconnect
Guest Kaz
Well after about a month of waiting on parts and finally getting all the parts back into the AT... I fired her up and put in reverse to try a test run. To my surprise the car lurched foward. I sticked it in neutral the car still lurches foward. DOH! :help: So All shift positions in the AT (except Park) make the car go fowards. I think I put enough ATF in (9 Qt) so I don't think its that. Anyone have any ideas? I hope I didn't screw up some thing in the valve body. But I was pretty careful and I did account for all the checkballs in the valvebody. I'm really not looking foward to taking the valve body out of the AT again...
Guest Kaz
Just thought I'd give an update... After getting taking out the valve body multiple times and checking everything.. Finally figured it out... I blame the Nissan FSM (Factory Service Manual)! The FSM states "Apply ATF to manual valve and install" Thats it! and thats exactly what I did. I slapped some ATF on and put it in its little hole. No where in the manual does it say "after valve body has been re-installed into the transmission connect the manual valve back to the shift arm." Only after I got one of those ATSG Rebuilders Tech manual from Ebay did I realize my mistake! They had a diagram of what each part does and what each part affects. The manual valve changes the shifting gear from P->R->N->D AHA! When I just threw the valve back in there it just left the car in drive. Ergo I could only go foward! makes sense! I finally put the valve back right and now she works fine!! YES!!! Anyway just thought I'd put this up since somewhere down the line I'm sure someone else might come across the same problem. BTW are all Nissan FSM this vague? I have a Acura FSM and its soo much more easier to understand!
