VG30 starter rebuild kit?

Well, it finally died. I was on my way home from a BBQ fundraiser/4x4 competition and stopped at McDonald's, tried to restart and... zippy. A guy from the event helped me push start it to get home. Although it wasn't too tough to do, this is not my preferred method of ignition. I was considering rebuilding the starter instead of coughing up the cash for a rebuilt one and was wondering if anyone has done it and could give me an idea of what to get.

BTW, if you think VG30 starters are a PITA to remove, try it with headers. You can't even get the 14mm socket by itself on the top bolt!

Usually you just have to replace the brushes. You have to tear apart the starter, solder the new brushes onto the base plate and then reassemble it. It's actually pretty easy if you can get the old base plate clean enough to make the solder stick. The innards are guaranteed to be full of nasty stuff.

Here, have a pic.

Um, yeah... I cleaned my starter when I pulled it to do the clutch. It took 1.5 cans of brake/electrical cleaner to start flushing almost clean !! It looked like a waste oil sump pump when I started. Anyone have a link for brushes or is that something common and easy to find ? I ask because I saw a new starter listed for $280 !! Yikes, I want a back up plan !!

thanks for the pic 88, it'll probably come in handy in the future but mine has not been acting up except for that one morning (different thread). I had the starter on my riding mower stop working and when I pulled it apart, I found that one of the magnets had disintegrated and there was one hell of a mess inside it. At that point, I simply bought a new one 'cause I wasn't about to try to fix it with that much damage. It's bad enough when it's full of crud but when the crud is magnetic, good luck even trying to get it cleaned out.
