Not sure I understand your questions, but on my '92 the t-shift goes (starting from the most forward position) 2H-4H-N-4L. When it is in "N" it doesn't move. When it is in anything other than 2H a green light on the dash above the shifter lights (it has some kind of silly picture - a bird's eye view of 4 wheels, IIRC).

if the 4x4 shifter is all the up (closest to the dash) your in 2wd, al the way down is 4lo. and yes there should be a 4x4 light, on my 93, its at the bottom right corner of my cluster. If your isnt working, it could simply be the wiring at the tcase, get under there and take a look and see if a wire looks bare or unplugged or just real dirty.

my sister drove the truck with the 4x4 shifter in N not the trans shifter, my qeustion is, is there a light that comes on when the 4x4 shifter is in anything but 2H were is supposed to be in normal driving conditions, the reason i ask is because im affraid that im in something other than 2H, since i have no expirence with this truck and because i just got it, im worried

I think you have the light but it doesnt go on. like mine. I have never seen It go on. and to be honest I think it is realitivly easy to tell if its in 2H or 4H just push the shifter forward as far as it will go....I think there is a switch on the tranny that might be unplugged or the light burnt out for the 4x4. the light should be on the right side of your steering wheel. like animal said birds eye view of 4wheels.

you can not drive with the 4x4 shifter in neutral, it just wouldnt move.  And the light will only come on in 4hi or 4lo.

thats what i thought but see claims she had it like that for 2 years and it moved, the hubs werent looked or anything

im not saying your wrong, i think im going to expirement

just shove it forward all the way and IT should be in 2H and ya you cant miss the light if you search the dash around the steeringwheel....wow ppl post fast

thats pretty much what i do, and yeah god they do

I highly doubt that... I don't have an auto, but neutral is neutral, as in not moving...

I understand your concern about not ruining your truck and there is no harm in asking, but I dont think shifting needs to go in the Tech section.

all right but im going to see if i can drive it a few feet with the 4x4 shifter in n

ok? -thnkboutit-

the other thing is make sure you back up 1m to unlock the automatic hubs (you should hear a couple of simultaneous clicks comng from the wheels)... otherwise you're spinning the t-case needlessly.

My switch just went kaput on my truck, now the little light doesn't come on. If you're curious to know where the switch is located, refer to this diagram (it came from Precise1's thread about speedo issues)
