i still wonder if the AC has to be taken apart (opened) during t-belt.. haven't search yet but if anybody knows let me know please

I replaced the T-belt on my 1990 and had no problem working around the A\C.

Actually I had no problem with any part of the replacement, besides keeping the crank from turning while removing the balancer.

You should also replace the water pump while you have it apart, it takes the same effort if the pump goes out as it is to replace the T-belt. It's also a good time to replace hoses and belts since all will be removed. Just my two-cents.

Old cars are nice, but take a lot of love. 65 VW convert baja, 78 Superbeetle convert, 87 BMW K75

This seems to be a trend I follow also. I have and '89 VW Cabriolet with over 180K that I use as a daily driver to work.... I stole it from my wife.

My 99 does the same thing with the AC.

If I brake-torque it and hold the RPMs above 1200 then it stays cold, but if I let it idle, then it gets hot...very hot.

I think the combination of my idle control system malfunction (still have to figure that one out), and my fan clutch (which is on the way out) is the culprit.

When I do my timing belt in 4k miles (HOLY HELL IT'S THAT SOON!?!?!) I'm going to either replace the fan clutch or install an e-fan...leaning towards e-fan.
